    Notes: We confirm the existence of a 15 A(ring) period in iodine-doped polyacetylene and provide a new interpretation for this key feature as part of a general model for structural changes during iodine doping. The observed diffraction intensities for different samples suggest the existence of structures with two different types of dopant-containing layers: layers obtained by complete replacement of polyacetylene chains by iodine columns (F layers) and layers obtained by replacement of every other polyacetylene chain by an iodine column (P layers). The F layers in the heavily doped complex alternate with dopant-free layers of polyacetylene chains (U layers), corresponding to a (UF)n stacking sequence. The phase obtained at a lower dopant concentration, which provides the 15 A(ring) spacing, is attributed to a (UPUF)n stacking sequence. At still lower dopant concentrations, one obtains a (UP)n stacking sequence. This model, along with published Raman, Mössbauer, and photoelectron spectroscopy data, suggests that the ratio of I−5 to I−3 increases in going from P layers to F layers. Intense and monotonically decreasing, diffuse x-ray scattering suggests that vacancies of size ∼3 A(ring) are present, probably in iodine columns. A diffuse reflection at 3.1 A(ring), observed in all iodine-doped samples, is due to an average iodine–iodine distance in disordered columnar arrays. On the other hand, ordered arrays of iodine columns in oriented samples give rise to sharp meridional reflections. All ten observed reflections (down to 1.17 A(ring)) in one sample could be indexed based on a 33.8 A(ring) repeat corresponding to (–I−3–I−5–I−3–)n arrays. The observed diffraction pattern was calculated from this model without using any freely adjustable parameters.

    Notes: The atomic scattering factor for iron has been measured on five low-order reflexions from pure iron at eighteen wavelengths in the range 0.63 to 2.53 Å; measurements have also been made on nickel for Cu Kα radiation to give additional checks with results of other workers. The variation of f for iron follows the Hönl theory for K-electrons quite closely, except for the 110 reflexion at wavelengths just short of the absorption edge. The dispersion corrections were independent of angle. The limiting values of f at high frequencies indicated by the results agree well with other theoretical and experimental values, except for the 110 reflexion.

    Notes: Zinc is an essential trace clement required for normal tunction of Ihe immune system. Deficiency of zinc results in marked thymic atrophy in experimental animals, and in man immunodeficiency is a recognized complication of zinc deprivation. Althoug numerous proteins require zinc as a cofactor, its precise functions in the immune system remain unknown. The mechanism by which metals stimulate lymphocytes, whether all T cells are responsive, and the relationship to zinc requirements have not been determined. We unexpectedly isolated a number of human T-cell lines that have a highly specific requirement for zinc. The ability to respond to zinc resides in only a subset of T cells since antigen-specific clones are not stimulated by zinc. Although proliferation requires the presence of antigen-presenting cells and is restricted by class II MHC antigens, antigen-presenting cells could not be pulsed with zinc to induce T-cell activation. Our results suggest that zinc-dependent T cells are a subset of CD4+ cells present in all normal individuals and that zinc stimulates their growth by novel mechanisms.

    Notes: Abstract Hypocrellin compounds were selected as potential photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT) owing to their high quantum yields of singlet oxygen (1O2), and facility for site-directed chemical modification to enhance phototoxicity, pharmacokinetics, solubility, and light absorption in the red spectral region, among other properties. Parent hypocrellins A and B share an absorption peak at 658 nm. These molecules may therefore be considered useful progenitors of derivatives which absorb more strongly in the red, considering that the ideal sensitizer should absorb in the 650–800 nm range, beyond the absorption range of hemoglobin and melanin, and where light penetration in tissues is maximized through reduced scattering. A series of pure, monomeric hypocrellin derivatives was tested for properties of dark cytotoxicity and photosensitizing potential by clonogenic assay in monolayer cultures of EMT6/Ed murine tumor cells. Their respective toxicities are reported on a molar basis. The in vitro screening assay has, to date, resulted in the selection of four hypocrellin derivatives for further development as photosensitizers for PDT. Cellular uptake for photosensitizing doses of selected compounds was determined by fluorimetry. Dose escalation studies in rodents indicate that potentially photosensitizing doses promote no demonstrable systemic toxicity.

    Notes: Summary Eleven lines and sublines of larynx carcinoma (HEp-2), cervical cancer (HeLa) and dedifferentiated astrocytoma (DAPT) cells were examined and viruses were isolated from eight lines. Electronmicroscopic, biophysical and biochemical examinations of the viruses showed that they belong to the B-type oncornaviruses. The virions had a size of 100 to 150 nm, they banded at densities of 1.16 to 1.17 g/ ml in sucrose gradients and RNA from the virions contained 60–70S component. The reproduction of the viruses was inhibited by actinomycin D, and the virions possessed reverse transcriptase (RNA-dependent DNA polymerase) activity. The isolated viruses differed antigenically from mouse mammary tumor virus.

    Notes: Abstract Various methods of obtaining virus-containing preparations from mouse mammary gland tumors in order to prepare rabbit antisera against antigens of mammary gland carcinoma virus were tested. The best results were obtained by precipitating the virus from the culture fluid of tumors grown in vitro after preliminary hormonal stimulation of virus production and subsequent purification of the virus in a sucrose density gradient.
