Notes: Alternative losses of the isobaric neutral species CH2O and NO· have been assessed for molecular ions of isomeric nitroanisoles fragmenting in the ion source and the first field free region of a double focusing mass spectrometer. Mass analyses of the primary fragment ions indicate that specific loss of CH2O occurs from molecular ions of 2-nitroanisole, while specific loss of NO· occurs from molecular ions of 3-nitroanisole. Although the peak due to [M—NO]+ ions is negligible in the mass spectrum of 2-nitroanisole, evidence is presented to show that they are transient intermediates in the consecutive fragmentation for loss of the elements of CNO2 from the molecular ions.

Notes: In tandem mass spectrometry, where typically one analyser is used to study the reactions of ions selected by another analyser from a mixture leaving the ion source, the output contains an additional dimension of information compared to that from conventional mass spectrometry. The increase in dimensionality tends to make the results less easy to assimilate and interpret, but the difficulties may be overcome in large measure by presenting the results in an appropriate graphical form. This review deals with the use of graphical representations of three-dimensional data to display the results of experiments in tandem mass spectrometry. Perspective diagrams or contour maps can be used to show the identity of the parent and daughter ions for all of the reactions occurring in a tandem mass spectrometer, including reactions of positive ions, reactions of negative ions and charge inversion reactions. A graphical approach is particularly valuable when double focusing mass spectrometers are used for tandem mass spectrometry, because it can make it much easier to establish the origin of the ions contributing to an observed peak and thus to determine whether interference is occurring. Factors bearing on the choice of a coordinate system are discussed. Relationships characterizing the more important simple and linked scanning modes are listed and the features to which they correspond in two selected coordinate systems are shown. Factors that influence the resolution of neighbouring peaks by sector field tandem mass spectrometers are discussed.

Notes: The ion current transmitted by the collector slit of a double focusing mass spectrometer is considered as a function of two variables which independently reflect the effects of the instrument's electric and magnetic sectors. The ionic products of reactions occurring in the source and in various regions of the flight tube give rise to peaks or ridges with distinctive shapes and positions in the surface so derived. Volumes under peaks are proportional to abundances of ions. The surface provides a unified view of the alternative methods of scanning and facilitates understanding of the contrasting perspectives of metastable peaks which they reveal. The method, which may be applied with instruments of either conventional or reversed geometry, is illustrated for the former by reference to that part of the surface for toluene which relates to the loss of H from the molecular ion.

Notes: Isobaric daughter ions formed from a common metastable ion have been analysed at high mass resolution. A three-dimensional representation is used to summarize the data for competitive CO and C2H4 losses and competitive CHO· and C2H5· losses from metastable molecular ions of cyclohexanone.

Notes: Two scanning modes can be used sequentially to determine the relative abundances of a series of daughter ions formed from the same parent ion in the field free region preceding the first sector of a double focusing mass spectrometer. Hydrogen exchange reactions in the molecular ions of benzoic acid and anisole have been analysed by these procedures, and a study of diphenylmethane demonstrates that the usual procedure of single scans gives rise to peaks that might be interpreted erroneously.

Notes: Analyses of masses and relative kinetic energies for metastable peaks may be achieved by the use in alternation of two types of linked scans of the electric sector voltage and magnetic field. The method is demonstrated by an appraisal of hydrogen exchange in molecular ions of 2-methyl-[2H3]-benzoic acid.
