Notes: The equation of state for hard spheres in a hard spherical container with small hemispherical imperfections in the surface was calculated. It was found that a focusing of the particles occurs at approximately one particle diameter from the center, opposite the imperfections. In this region, there is a large increase in pressure and density and a change in the equation of state at this point. The sharp focusing is due to the focused radial velocity generated by the hemisphere interacting with the bulk fluid. The effect is apparent near the center as the density is lowest there.

Notes: Foliar application of CUSO4 to mature grass to increase the Cu content of the hay crop was markedly affected by rainfall within 24 h of the time of application. The mean Cu concentration of hay treated with 5·6 and 11·2 kg CuSO4/ha was 100 and 208 ppm, respectively, when no rainfall occurred during this period, but only 24 and 41 ppm when rain fell within 24 h. Rain 4 or 5 days after spray application had no effect on the ultimate Cu concentration of the hay. It is suggested that sheep could safely graze the aftermath as, with one exception, concentrations of Cu found were only from 11·4 to 20·6 ppm. l±l kg CuSO4/ha applied in dry conditions was sufficient to raise Cu concentrations in hay to levels which should preclude the occurrence of Cu deficiency when fed to cattle in winter. Reductions in hay yield following CUSO4 applications in dry weather suggest a need to examine the use of more dilute sprays, or other means for increasing the Cu content of hay.

Notes: Objective To determine whether recurrent miscarriage is associated with reduced selenium status.Design Case–control study.Setting Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Glasgow Royal Maternity Hospital.Population Twenty nonpregnant women with a history of unexplained recurrent miscarriage, and 47 nonpregnant parous women with a history of at least one successful pregnancy and no more than one miscarriage. Methods A 7 mL blood sample from each woman was collected into lithium heparin ‘vacutainer’ tubes. Samples were centrifuged at 3000 g for 15 minutes, and plasma was extracted and stored at −20°C. Selenium concentrations were measured using a fluorescence spectrophotometer. The selenium concentrations in the two groups were compared and the differences examined using the Student's t test.Main outcome measures Plasma selenium concentration (μg/L).Results The mean selenium concentration for women with a history of unexplained recurrent miscarriage was 67.7 μg/L (SD 16.4). The selenium level for the women with no history of recurrent miscarriage was 70.3 μg/L (SD 12.7). There was no difference in selenium concentrations between the two groups (P= 0.53).Conclusions In this study there is no association between unexplained recurrent miscarriage and reduced selenium status, implying that reduced selenium status is not a factor in the pathogenesis of recurrent miscarriage. We can find no rationale for a trial of selenium therapy in women with a history of recurrent miscarriage.

Notes: The equation of state for hard spheres in a spherical cavity is calculated and compared with the results previously found when the containing boundary was a channel. It was found that the spherical surface provides a focusing effect on both the pressure and the compressibility factor. An examination of the results suggested that the density and compressibility factors could be expanded in a series of Maxwellian functions. It was found that a six-term series which was modified in the immediate vicinity of the wall was sufficient. This has an advantage over the usual Fourier series expansion in that less terms are required. In addition, an argument can be made that such a series has a foundation in the physics of the problem.

Notes: A molecular dynamics study of the thermodynamics properties, including equation of state, of hard spheres in a narrow channel is presented. Four densities are studied and it is found that the pressure profile is directly correlated to the density profile. Further, the fraction of the total pressure due to collisions in a direction normal to the wall is also correlated to the density profile. The equation of state is that of a hard sphere fluid at a density higher then the fluid and it varies across the channel. The motion of particles near the wall is constrained as found earlier in Monte Carlo studies.

Notes: Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) swards were given annual applications in six equal instalments at 21-day intervals of either 100, 400 or 700 kg ha−1 N in 1973 and 1974. Ewes with twin lambs were rotationally grazed on these areas. The nitrate-N content of the grass was measured immediately before grazing. Blood samples were taken at regular intervals from the ewes and lambs to estimate blood methaemoglobin and certain plasma mineral concentrations. A maximum nitrate-N concentration of of 0.67% in the herbage dry matter was recorded but no adverse effect of N fertilizer was found in terms of the blood constituents or growth of the sheep, or in the carcase quality of the lambs.

Notes: We report a case of severe carcinoma-associated dermatomyositis which, having; shown no response to conventional treatment, improved markedly within 48 h of plasmapheresis. We believe that this is the first time that dermatomyositis associated with an advanced carcinoma has been reported to respond in this way.
