Notes: [Auszug] X-RAY studies of these minerals in relation to (a) their reactions with organic liquids (MacEwan), (b) the effect of heat treatment (G. W. B. and K. R.) have led us to certain conclusions which can best be expressed in a joint communication. Meta-halloysite has the same formula as kaolinite, ...

Notes: [Auszug] I HAVE recently directed attention1 to the complexes which montmorillonite forms with polyhydric alcohols, a subject which has been further discussed in a paper by Bradley2. In these complexes, the alcohol takes the role of water in hydrated montmorillonite, and ...

Notes: [Auszug] The first modification to be expected in the 'crystalline' layer of ions is that, as more space becomes available, it should separate into two layers, one attached to each of the facing surfaces. We may reasonably suppose that each of the two layers thus formed will arrange itself so as to make the ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE nature of the forces giving rise to the intra-crystalline swelling of montmorillonite has been several times discussed. The recent work of Bradley1 and of myself2,3,4 on the swelling caused by adsorption of organic liquids enables us to get a clearer view of the problem, because these liquids ...

Notes: [Auszug] Our new results are plotted in Fig. 1. Between 4 and 16 carbon atoms, the spacing rises linearly with the chain-length, and the slope of the line is 2-6 A. per carbon atom. This corresponds almost exactly to the projected length of two C-C single bonds, and indicates that there are two layers of ...

Notes: [Auszug] This we now believe to be due to the change of the sorbed film from the liquid to the solid state. If this assumption is accepted, it follows that the sorbed films solidify more readily than the pure substances, for which the liquid-solid transition occurs between 11 and 12 C-atoms. Evidence for ...

Notes: Summary A simple method based on Fourier transforms is described, for calculating X-ray diffraction effects due to interstratified mixtures of layers. The method is exact, and allows the following factors to be taken into account: crystallite size (including cases where the crystallites all not all of the same size), degree of randomness, variation of layer structure factor.

Notes: Crystals of boric acid were treated with normal amines. In this way a series of complex salts were prepared, in which the amine chaines are probably oriented perpendicular to the boric acid layers. The amines can not be replaced by other substances, so it is not certain that this is a typical case of interlamellar sorption.
