Notes:
Summary Films of cellulose from cadoxen and cellulose acetate from acetone are spread on the solution of cross-linking agent. Surface potentials are measured at the interfaces of cellulose/cellulose acetate and the solutions of crosslinking agent. Data are obtained as a function of concentration of dimethylol ethylene urea, dimethylol propylene urea and MgCl2 · 6H2O and at different pH. The surface potentials are found to increase with the increase of pH from 1 to 3, beyond this pH no significant change is noticed. The surface potentials decrease with the increase in the concentration of DMEU and DMPU in the solution phase. This is due to accumulation of charges of resin molecules i. e. methylol hydroxyls and carbonyl groups. An increase in the surface potential with the increase in concentration of MgCl2-6H2O is explained due to increase in ionization of carboxyl groups of cellulose/ cellulose acetate and also due to the modification of water structure in the presence of magnesium chloride. The results are in agreement with the thermodynamics of chemisorption of these cross-linking agents on cellulose.
