Notes: Abstract A new pivotal strategy for reducing storage and arithmetic operations in computing the inverse of a matrix is outlined. This algorithm uses recursive deletion and partition to generate an efficient structure. The optimal selection of rows and columns to be deleted (spikes) is greatly facilitated through the use of certain exclusion criteria. The algorithm produces significantly fewer fill-ins and requires significantly fewer operations than the alternative P3 and P4 algorithms for the product form of the inverse (PFI). It also produces satisfactory structures for problems for which P3 and P4 would generate zero pivots. Three variants of HP algorithm specifically tailored for the elimination form of the inverse (EFI) and for greater speed are also presented. The algorithm has been implemented on a CDC 6400 computer. Performance comparison on six sample problems is given.

Notes: A model that describes fractionation with condensation and evaporation in a plate-fin device has been formulated. It is capable of evaluating profiles of composition, temperature, and flow rate for both liquid and vapor streams in an extended surface device. The device may be adiabatic or nonadiabatic and the surface may be incompletely wetted. Compared to experimental measurements, the model predictions showed ± 1 number of transfer unit deviation along the length of the device. The predictions of the top and bottom flow rate ratio showed a 5-10% deviation for adiabatic and condensation runs and a 25% deviation for evaporation runs.

Notes: The measurement test proposed by Mah and Tamhane (1982) allows the gross error associated with a measurement to be directly identified without a separate procedure. In this paper a comprehensive evaluation of this test was carried out based on two different definitions of its power. The influence of constraints, network configuration, position of measurement, magnitudes of gross error and standard deviations, number of measurements, and other factors were summarized as rules and guidelines for the application of this test. The simulation procedure developed in this investigation may be used to design a gross error detection scheme for any specific application.

Notes: It is shown that temperatures and flows in a process network can be estimated from a quasi steady state model and a discrete Kalman filter. The data needed for such an application are readily available in many operating plants, and the computational requirements are within the capabilities of available process computers.

Notes: A novel distillation scheme which makes use of secondary reflux and vaporization to enhance thermal efficiency is presented. Low operating temperatures, close boiling mixture, and tight product specifications appear to favor this scheme over the conventional distillation. Computer simulation indicates a potential utility reduction of 50 to 75%.

Notes: As an alternative to tearing, symbolic permutation may be used to facilitate data processing rather than dimensional reduction in equation solving, permitting a reduction in computing effort without introducing any deleterious effects on the numerical convergence. Data structures and processing techniques suitable for this purpose have been successfully devised and tested. A program incorporating these techniques has been implemented on a CDC 6400 computer and used to solve irreducible systems of up to 551 linear and nonlinear equations.

Notes: A model is presented to describe the behavior of falling film fractionators with evaporation or condensation. Experimental measurements of vapor composition, vapor temperature and wall temperature profiles were made. Close agreement suggests that the model is applicable to both adiabatic and nonadiabatic conditions.

Notes: SPARSCODE was evaluated based on the simulation of natural gas liquefaction using multicomponent refrigerants. Results obtained on four cases containing 179 to 573 equations show a computing time reduction by a factor of 40 to 250 in equation solving and an overall reduction by a factor of 4 to 30 for the simulation.
