    Notes: Image sequence processing methods were applied to study the effect of elevated CO2 on the diel leaf growth cycle for the first time in a dicot plant. Growing leaves of Populus deltoides, in stands maintained under ambient and elevated CO2 for up to 4 years, showed a high degree of heterogeneity and pronounced diel variations of their relative growth rate (RGR) with maxima at dusk. At the beginning of the season, leaf growth did not differ between treatments. At the end of the season, final individual leaf area and total leaf biomass of the canopy was increased in elevated CO2. Increased final leaf area at elevated CO2 was achieved via a prolonged phase of leaf expansion activity and not via larger leaf size upon emergence. The fraction of leaves growing at 30–40% day−1 was increased by a factor of two in the elevated CO2 treatment. A transient minimum of leaf expansion developed during the late afternoon in leaves grown under elevated CO2 as the growing season progressed. During this minimum, leaves grown under elevated CO2 decreased their RGR to 50% of the ambient value. The transient growth minimum in the afternoon was correlated with a transient depletion of glucose (less than 50%) in the growing leaf in elevated CO2, suggesting diversion of glucose to starch or other carbohydrates, making this substrate temporarily unavailable for growth. Increased leaf growth was observed at the end of the night in elevated CO2. Net CO2 exchange and starch concentration of growing leaves was higher in elevated CO2. The extent to which the transient reduction in diel leaf growth might dampen the overall growth response of these trees to elevated CO2 is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Intracellular free calcium ([Ca2+]i), an important second messenger, plays a crucial role in a variety of biochemical reactions leading to cell activation and protein secretion. This study examines the potential role of (Ca2+)i in mediating increases in pericellular plasminogen activator activity of canine keratinocytes observed upon binding of human pemphigus vulgaris IgG (hPV IgG). Using the calcium-sensitive fluorescent probe fura-2 and digital video fluorescence imaging microscopy, [Ca2+]i levels were determined in individual keratinocytes for up to 29 minutes after addition of 0.1–5 mg/ml hPV IgG to monolayers of subconfluent and confluent cultures. Extracellular ATP (a known [Ca2+]i-agonist in canine keratinocytes) and normal human IgG (nh IgG) served as positive and negative controls, respectively. HPV IgG and nh IgG failed to induce significant increases in [Ca2+]i whereas 500 μM ATP induced a rapid, 3- to 12-fold transient increase above resting levels. Binding of hPV IgG to these keratinocyte cultures was demonstrated by immunoflurescence at the end of selected experiments. ATP stimulation of cultures previously treated with hPV IgG showed normal responsiveness and more than 90% of the cells were still viable at the end of [Ca2plus;]i imaging, thus demonstrating that failure to respond to hPV IgG was not due to an experimental artifact. Plasminogen activator activity in supernatants of confluent cultures incubated with 0.1– 1 mg/ml hPV IgG or nh IgG and harvested at various time intervals was dependent on the IgG dose used and increased steadily over time. Increases in activity were 47–92% higher in cultures treated with hPV IgG than those incubated with the same dose of nh IgG. Taken together, these results suggest that hPV IgG-mediated increases in pericellular uPA activity occur via pathways independent of Ca2+ mobilization.

    Notes: Abstract The dissolution of the active materials of lead-acid batteries in fluoboric electrolyte has been studied. The use of redox couples such as Ti3+/Ti4+ is proposed for an efficient and quick dissolution of lead and lead dioxide mixtures. For PbO2 and Pb electrodeposited on platinum electrodes the rate of dissolution in HBF4 (200 g dm−3) containing Ti ions (0.3m) corresponds to a current density of 400 A cm−2 and 160 A cm−2, respectively. Dissolved oxygen has a marked influence on lead dissolution acting as an oxidizer of Ti3+ to Ti4+. It has also been shown that the Fe2+/Fe3+ couple can be used, although with lower benefits. For industrial applications, a concentration of Ti ions of about 0.051m and the use of a counter-current electrolyte flow in the electrolysis cell can advantageously accomplish the leaching process of pastes and slimes in a batteries recycling plant.

    Notes: Abstract The kinetics of nickel-zinc co-deposition and the effect of nickel on zinc morphology have been studied by means of chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction and SEM observations of cathodic deposits obtained in various experimental conditions, including acid and alkaline baths. It has been shown that nickel ions, even if present in the electrolyte at very low concentrations (1 ppm), do not deposit under mass transport controlled conditions but are dragged by zinc ions whose concentration influences the nickel current. With regard to zinc morphology, it has been observed that nickel reduces the grain size of the zinc crystals formed during the electrodeposition.

    Notes: Abstract The electrochemical behaviour of lead dioxide cycled in sulphuric acid under galvanostatic (discharge) and potentiostatic (charge) conditions has been investigated. The results illustrate the effect of the sulphate barrier layer forming on PbO2. This layer shifts the equilibrium potential of the electrodes without influence on the kinetics of the reduction, which seems to be dependent on a diffusive step associated with the onset of an O2− gradient in the dioxide. As for the sulphate oxidation, it has been found that this process is mainly affected by the end potential reached during the previous galvanostatic reduction.

    Notes: Abstract The codeposition of some elements with lead from fluoborate baths has been studied in order to obtain lead alloys with a low concentration of a second metal. The metals considered were As, Bi, Cu, Sb, Se, Sn and Te. The chemical analysis of alloys obtained in various electrolysis conditions permitted an investigation of the kinetic behaviour of the metals codeposited with lead. The results showed that only Bi, Sb, Se and Te attain a limiting value of discharge current density and that the codeposition is regular for all metals. SEM observation of the deposits revealed that Sb and Se have a marked influence on the crystal morphology while the remaining metals induce only minor modifications.
