Notes: The linearized initial-value problem of capillary-gravity waves generated by a moving oscillatory surface pressure distribution in a viscous incompressible fluid of infinite depth is solved. It is found that viscosity apart from introducing a damping factor into the amplitude of each wave plays an important role in the critical case. While the solution in the inviscid fluid becomes singular for certain values of the parameters of the problem, the solution in viscous fluid remains valid for all values of the parameters, though the amplitudes are relatively large in the critical case.

Notes: Background : Many symptomatic patients take proton pump inhibitors or histamine-2 blockers for years and those without gastro-oesophageal reflux disease might benefit from Helicobacter pylori eradication.Aim : To increase testing and treatment of H. pylori and reduce chronic use of proton pump inhibitors and histamine-2 blockers. Methods : We conducted a three-armed controlled trial in 14 managed care practices. We included adults who used proton pump inhibitors or histamine-2 blockers for 〉1 year and excluded those with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease or previous endoscopy. We compared usual care (n = 312 patients from 6 practices) to low-intensity (n = 147 from 3 practices) and high-intensity (n = 122 from 5 practices) interventions. Low-intensity intervention consisted of guidelines, patient-lists, and a ‘toolkit’; high-intensity intervention added academic group detailing by a gastroenterologist with reinforcement by pharmacists. Results : Compared with usual care, the high-intensity intervention increased H. pylori test-ordering (29% versus 9% at 12 months, P = 0.02). About half (23 of 58) of patients tested positive and 22 received eradication treatments. The high-intensity intervention decreased proton pump inhibitor use by 9% per year (P = 0.028), but did not alter histamine-2 blocker use. The low intensity intervention was ineffective. Conclusions : Providing guidelines, patient-lists, and toolkits was no better than usual care. Adding group detailing and pharmacist reinforcements led to improvements in H. pylori management and decreases in proton pump inhibitor use.

Notes: Abstract Exact solutions of the Stokes equations are given for asymmetric flows produced by a closed torus which steadily translates along or rotates about a direction perpendicular to its axis of rotational symmetry in a quiescent viscous fluid. The force and couple acting on the body are calculated and the general motion of a closed torus is considered.

Notes: Summary An exact solution is obtained for the motion of a fluid contained in an infinité circular cylinder which is undergoing both torsional and longitudinal oscillations. An analytical expression is obtained for the viscous drag on the cylinder and the velocity is depicted graphically. Where possible, comparisons are made with corresponding results for the external problem.

Notes: Abstract A method is presented for determining the exact solution of the Stokes equation for axisymmetric streaming flow past a torus. By solving directly for the velocity and pressure fields rather than introducing a stream function, the problem is reduced to the solution of a second order difference equation for a coefficient sequence. The force acting on the torus is evaluated for a number of values of the parameter defining the torus geometry.

Notes: Summary The drag experienced in a micropolar fluid is investigated by considering uniform streaming past a flat plate. Some recent results on the fundamental solution of the Oseenlinearization of the micropolar flow equations are used to reduce the problem to that of solving a scalar integral equation. The integral equation is analyzed by the application of both asymptotic and variational methods. Results indicate that the drag experienced in a micropolar fluid always exceeds that found in the absence of any micropolarity; however one of the parameters which characterizes a micropolar fluid can be used to minimize the drag.

Notes: Summary Using an energy integral method it is proved that the motion of a non-heat conducting compressible micropolar fluid in a bounded regionV=V(t) is uniquely determined by the initial distributions of velocity, microrotation, density and temperature, together with certain boundary conditions.
