Notes: Abstract We present calculations for the influence of fluctuations in high field superconductors where the critical field is limited by Pauli paramagnetism. Due to the fact that the critical field at the second order phase transition point as function of temperature may have a maximum atT≠0 the additional conductivity due to fluctuations may have a nonmonotonic temperature dependence. This way we can account for recent experimental findings by Tedrow, Meservey and Schwartz. We also calculate the additional tunneling density of states due to fluctuations. Under proper conditions it exhibits a maximum at zero frequency like in the gapless regime. Finally we show that our findings of a nonmonotonic resistivity should also apply to superconductors containing magnetic impurities such as La3-x Gd x In in an external field.

Notes: Abstract Metallic contacts between superconducting and normal films are known to have a pair-breaking effect on the electron pairs. By limiting our considerations to the gapless regime and to contacts between superconducting and paramagnetic metals the features of this pair-breaking mechanism are investigated. We compute the normalization of the order parameter and with it such quantities as the tunneling conductance, electrical and thermal conductivity and the critical current parallel to the contact. Furthermore we investigate the influence of a magnetic field. By calculating theℵ 2(t)-parameter we demonstrate the interplay between the different pair-breaking mechanisms in perpendicular and parallel fields. In the latter case we discuss the influence of the contact on the superconducting sheath proposed bySaint-James andde Gennes. Experiments to test the present theory are suggested.

Notes: Abstract We reexamine here microscopically the transport properties of the vortex state in a dirty type II superconductor in the high-field region. We show that the previous theory by Caroli and Maki predicts the entropy carried by a single vortex line, which is consistent with recent experiments, provided the expression of the heat current is properly corrected. Furthermore, we show that a large heat delivered by vortex lines together with the normal thermoelectric effect, which persists even in the vortex state, results in a large Hall current in the vortex state. This may account for a large Hall effect observed by Niessenet al. in Nb-Ta alloys.

Notes: Abstract The additional conductivity due to the fluctuation of the order parameter in dirty type-II superconductors is reconsidered. It is shown that in a magnetic fieldH slightly above the upper critical field the electric conductivity is strongly anisotropic depending on the relative direction of the magnetic field and the electric current. In the parallel case (i.e.,H ∥J) the conductivity diverges like(H−H c2)−3/2, while in the perpendicular case (H ⊥J) it diverges like(H−H c2)−1/2.

Notes: Abstract The ultrasonic attenuation of the excitonic state in pure Bi in high magnetic fields is studied theoretically. Use is made of the mean-field approximation to describe the excitonic state in pure Bi in the extreme quantum limit, where the motion of the electron and the hole is limited only in the direction parallel to the magnetic field. The attenuation constant of the longitudinal sound has a broad peak below the excitonic transition temperatureT c and then decreases rapidly as the temperature decreases, which agrees qualitatively with a recent observation by Sakaiet al.

Notes: Abstract The thermoelectric power in the fluctuation region above the superconducting transition temperatureT c is studied theoretically. Use is made of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation due to Ebisawa and Fukuyama, which includes the correction term of the order ofT/μ as well, whereT is the temperature and μ is the chemical potential. It is shown that the thermoelectric power tends to zero as (T−T c ) ln [T/(T−T c )] and as (T−T c ) as the temperature approaches the transition temperatureT c for the two-dimensional and the one-dimensional systems, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Spin waves in the A phase of superfluid3He are studied theoretically. It is assumed that the condensate in the A phase consists of theP-wave triplet pairs of the type suggested by Anderson and Brinkman. We show that the spin wave mode with a finite energy gap exists throughout the A phase. In particular atT=0 K the dispersion of the spin wave is given by, forvq〈Δ, $$\omega ^2 = \omega _0^2 + 2(1 - \bar I)A\Delta ^2 + \tfrac{1}{3}(1 - \bar I)v^2 q^2 $$ where θ is the spin wave energy, ω T =[ω 0 2 +2(1−Ī)AΔ2]1/2 is the nuclear magnetic resonance energy,v is the Fermi velocity,q is the wave vector of the spin wave, andĪ=IN(0)=−1/4Z 0 is the Landau-Fermi liquid parameter.

Notes: The stability region of the helical textures in3He-A in thev s-H phase diagram is theoretically determined. Herev sis the superflow velocity andH (∥v s) is the external magnetic field. The pitch of the helixk −1 that minimizes the Gibbs free energy and the corresponding inclination angles ofl andd are determined numerically as functions ofv sandH. The NMR frequencies (two longitudinal and four transverse frequencies) associated with the helical texture are obtained.

Notes: We calculate the equilibrium configurations of three textures in a narrow cylinder in the presence of superflow along the cylinder axis. The Mermin-Ho texture is shown to be unstable against a small twist in the dipole-free limit even in the absence of superflow. The radial disgyration undergoes a second-order transition forqR ∼-3.31, while the circular disgyration gives rise to a helical texture forpR ≳ 3.5, whereR is the radius of the cylinder andq [≡ (2m/ħ)V s]andp are momenta associated with superflow. The associated nuclear magnetic resonance frequencies are determined.
