    Notes: This paper outlines the knowledge and technology sourcing practices of a range of key firms and organisations across the UK based on primary research, and analyses the key factors related to managing the technological knowledge boundaries of the firm. In particular, the paper considers the dynamic dimension considerations to such issues. As such it outlines important differences between short and long time horizons, before analysing in more detail some of the implications for firms of technological change over the long term. The paper seeks to highlight the importance of the time dimension in helping to explain why and how firms source technological knowledge externally and how they align their sourcing activities to their strategies associated with developing current and future capabilities.

    Notes: Managing new Information Technology innovations requires an understanding of factors that influence organisational choice. When large firms invest in new IT applications such as Computer Aided Design, there is reason to doubt that they adequately understand user needs. Empirical investigation in a UK cables producing Multinational Company highlights the practical challenges faced by such designers, when designing bespoke systems technologies. In addition to understanding end market requirements, it is imperative to understand existing organisational practices and constraints. Evidence from this in-depth innovation study points to the need to develop integrative theoretical accounts, which include insights from the innovation adoption process as well as the innovation design process.

    Notes: One of the major challenges inside firms is how to effectively manage their knowledge assets in the context of managing the transfer of technological knowledge across the firm's organizational boundaries. This paper explores technological knowledge flows and the coordination of knowledge activity through use of geographically dispersed cross-functional teams, as a way of integrating diverse knowledge via technology transfer projects. As multinational companies (MNCs) have increased the volume of technological knowledge that flows between their corporate headquarters and subsidiary operations, with rapid speed in many cases, many large firms are having to face increasing challenges of now transferring more 'softer' forms of technological knowledge, since this is recognized as an enabler of competitive advantage for firms. Developing this theme, the paper provides a theoretical review of some helpful contributions in this area and provides some empirical research knowledge management insights, gained from conducting research interviews with different functional managers from four UK-based multinational firms.
