    Notes: UV-curable systems based on the copolymerisation of a typical acrylic resin with low amount of fluorinated monomers (less than 1 per cent w/w) were prepared. The bulk properties of the films were unchanged, while a strong modification of the surface was obtained, depending on the monomer structure, on its concentration and on the type of substrate.

    Notes: New acrylic and allylic resins were prepared by functionalising perfluoropolyethers chains, which assured peculiar surface properties. Blends having a different amount of the acrylic and of the allylic systems were cured in air by UV irradiation. The cure of the films was found dependent on the ratio between the two resins; the concentration for the obtaining of a film fully cured in air was determined. On the basis of this concentration, a macromer functionalised with the right amount of both the acrylic group and the allylic one was synthesised.

    Notes: Summary Diethyleneglycoldivinylether (DVE2) and triethyleneglycoldivinylether (DVE3) were photopolymerised together with monovinylethers and hydroxyalkylvinylethers, in order to study the curing reaction and to evaluate the properties of the films obtained. In the presence of the monovinylethers, the flexibility of the cured films increased and the Tg values decreased. In the presence of a hydroxyalkylvinyl ether, a stronger plasticisation effect was obtained and attributed to a chain transfer reaction involving -OH groups.

    Notes: Abstract The wettability and the adhesion of polyethylene films were improved by introducing polar groups in the polymer chains. The surface properties of films grafted with maleic anhydride (MA) were investigated. The wettability was found to be dependent on the MA content, on the film preparation conditions and on the hydrolytic process of the anhydride groups. The kinetics of the hydrolysis indicated a restructuring of the polymeric surface due to the movement of the polar groups towards the surface; it did not influence the adhesion properties. The behaviour of the maleinized films was compared with oxygen plasma treated materials, which showed a better wettability, but a worse adhesion on polar substrates than the maleinized polyethylene. These results were explained on the basis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analyses, by which the main functional groups present at the surface were identified and quantitatively determined. © 1998 Chapman & Hall
