Notes: We report the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the resistivity of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 thin film over a wide temperature range and in high magnetic fields up to 20 T. Both above and below the ferromagnetic (FM) transition, the field dependence of the magnetoresistance (MR) can be described well using the extended Mott hopping conduction model. The large MR is proportional to the Brillouin function BJ in the FM phase and to BJ2 in the paramagnetic state which is consistent with this model. The value of spin moment J deduced from the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the MR is large (∼60) in the vicinity of the FM transition. This large value of J has been attributed to the presence of magnetic clusters due to the short-range FM ordering. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The thermal diffusivity of bulk and epitaxial layer samples of the giant magnetoresistance compounds Nd0.67Sr0.33MnO3−δ and La0.67Ca0.33MnO3−δ is investigated in a comparative study for temperatures between 35 and 350 K in order to detect preparational differences and to correlate the thermal transport with magnetization M and resistivity ρ. We find for Nd–Sr an anomaly of the heat diffusivity D near 145 K (80 K La–Ca) which we attribute to a temperature-induced canted metal to AFM insulator transition and a second anomaly in D(T) near 250 K (300 K) which we assign to the transition to paramagnetism. The low-temperature anomaly can be a step of up to five times in the heat conductivity, which makes these compounds potential magnetic field activated heat switches, as this transition can also be induced by a magnetic field. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The antiferromagnetic BaCo0.9Ni0.1S2−y and the paramagnetic CuIr2S4 Mott systems show an inverse conductivity behavior, i.e., the metallic phase occurs at low or high temperatures, respectively, which also suggests inverse behavior in other transport properties. In this contribution we present magnetization data, conductivity, thermal conductivity, and Seebeck effect in the temperature range 4.2 K〈T〈350 K and in particular through the metal-insulator transition at TMI. We recover the anomalies in χ(T),σ(T), which are discussed using Jahn-Teller and anti-Jahn-Teller models; also, we compare the anomalies in σ(T), S(T), and of the heat conductivity κ(T) at TMI. In particular, for BaCo0.9Ni0.1S1.95, we find a step in κ of almost one order of magnitude (times 6) and a large pressure shift, ≤−24 K/kbar, which makes this material a potential pressure activated heat switch, while CuIr2S4 shows a small step of κ (times 1.2) and a pressure shift of +2.8 K/kbar. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The Seebeck effect and the thermal diffusivity of La0.67Ca0.33MnO3−δ were investigated in the temperature range 35〈T〈300 K and in particular in the regime of the high magnetoresistance and maximum resistivity ρmax. We find a sign change of the thermoelectric power S(T) and a step in heat conductivity near ρmax which we attribute to a temperature-induced metal–insulator transition at about 80 K, suggesting that the large giant magnetoresistance found in these substances is due to a field-induced metal–insulator transition. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: One hundred ASA grade 1 or 2 patients were studied to assess the use of awake oxygen saturation to determine the necessary inspired oxygen fraction during anaesthesia. The inspired oxygen fraction was adjusted gradually to the lowest possible value to maintain the pre-operative oxygen saturation at a constant level. Normocapneic ventilation was maintained and analgesia was provided with 0.5mg.kg-1 of pethidine given intravenously. In addition to routine monitoring and measurement (electrocardiograph, oxygen saturation, expired carbon dioxide concentration and noninvasive blood pressure), arterial samples for blood gas analysis and venous samples for lactate and pyruvate levels were taken when awake and 30 min after achieving a steady state with a minimum inspired oxygen fraction. The mean inspired oxygen fraction required in these patients was 20.91 (SD 1.92%) ranging from 18–25%. The arterial pH were 7.34 (SD 4.04) (awake) and 7.35 (SD 3.15) (after 30 min), the partial pressure of oxygen 13.17 (SD 1.97) (awake) and 13.83 (SD 1.6 kPa) (after 30 min) and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide and base excess were normal. Serum lactate levels were 1.04 (SD 0.25) (awake) and 1.15 (SD 0.48) (after 30 min) mmol.l-1, whilst pyruvate levels were 0.1 (SD 0.02) (awake) and 0.12 (SD 0.21) (after 30 min) mmol.l-1. Patients’recovery and postoperative course were uneventful.

Notes: Presents findings from a study that investigated the propagation of quality management practices among Indian manufacturing companies over a period of 16 years from 1980 to 1996. Reports the findings of a mail questionnaire survey conducted on 500 selected companies from 14 manufacturing sectors. The extent to which quality management practices have been implemented is reported and the obstacles to adoption are identified. The spread of quality initiatives in various functional areas is analysed and discussed. The paper will be of particular interest to practicing managers as it identifies a number of policies that governments may use to stimulate the adoption of quality management concepts in developing countries.

Notes: This paper describes a framework in developing MIS-user interfaces to highlight how generic management information systems can be made more useful to managerial decision making. The suggested framework has been implemented in a medium-sized job shop manufacturing company. Object-oriented programming technology is used to provide flexible access to information stored by a generic MIS, namely ManuSoft. To improve the usefulness of the MIS, 20 interfacing programs relating to the information requirements at operational, planning and strategic levels have been developed and implemented. For purposes of illustration, three such programs have been described in this paper.

Notes: Previous surveys on quality management have shown that increasingly firms in Australia are adopting and implementing quality control tools and a total quality management philosophy. This paper attempts to determine the effectiveness of quality initiatives that have been implemented and integrated within Australian manufacturing firms. The authors used a combination of questionnaire surveys and interviews to gather information from quality professionals about the different types of quality tools being implemented by firms. The findings of this study are compared with other national and international surveys. A major finding of this study is that the trend of quality initiatives being implemented has been increasing since the early 1980s and the increase is observed in all functional areas of manufacturing. In addition, it reported that manufacturing firms are more conscious about quality and customer satisfaction than ever before. This paper attempts to establish relationships between the adoption of quality initiatives and its benefits with respect to reducing rejects and labour disputes, and increasing revenue.
