    Notes: An electron microscope study of the thymus in trout, Salmo gairdneri, showed that the membrane separating the thymus gland from the extenal water current was not specialized, but merely a continuation of the pharyngeal epithelium. This is discussed in relation to the evolution of the thymus in vertebrates, and to the possible effects on the thymus during hyperosmotic infiltration, a technique used for immunization.

    Notes: A functional T cell population matures rapidly in the carp, Cyprinus carpio L. At 22 ± 1° C, the thymus first appears at two days post-hatch and becomes actively lymphopoietic by day 5. The kidney, which contains haemopoietic tissue at day 2, shows differentiating lymphoid cells by day 6–8. The spleen first appears at day 5 but develops more slowly than the kidney.Lymphocytes are capable of effecting allograft rejection as early as day 16 post-hatch but the number of cells invading a skin allograft is low if the graft is applied in the first month of life. Thereafter the numbers increase rapidly, possibly correlated with the large increase in lymphocytes in the pronephric and mesonephric kidneys at this time.

    Notes: Abstract The phagocytosis of colloidal carbon in the adults and fry of Salmo gairdneri Richardson was investigated. Adult fish accumulated trapped carbon in the spleen, kidney and heart. Fry, as early as 4 days post-hatch, had an efficient phagocytic system, the carbon being engulfed by free macrophages which accumulated in the connective tissue, under the skin, in the gut and in the gills. By 18 days post-hatch, the situation was similar to that found in the adult. The trapping of carbon in the gills of young fry is discussed, and it is suggested that it acts as a special mechanism to protect the thymus from undesirable, and possible tolerigizing antigen exposure before immunocompetence is attained.

    Notes: Abstract. Antigen localization studies in the mirror carp Cyprinus carpio were carried out using a soluble antigen, human gamma globulin and a cellular bacterial antigen, Aeromonas salmonicida. Antigen was detected using direct single layer and indirect double layer immunofluorescent techniques, respectively. A study of the spleen, pronephros, mesonephros, liver and thymus at various times after administration of the antigen showed that fluorescence occurs mainly in the ellipsoids of the spleen and in the haemopoietic parenchyma of the pronephros and mesonephros and reaches its greatest intensity when antibody titres are relatively high. A direct comparison with antigen localization in the clawed toad Xenopus laevis, has enabled us to analyse possible evolutionary trends towards the complex dendritic retention of antigen seen in the higher vertebrates.

    Notes: This paper examines the effect of early thymectomy on the subsequent development of lymphoid tissues in the toad, Xenopus laevis. At the time of thymic removal (8 days post-fertilization) all the lymphoid organ anlagen are at a rudimentary state of differentiation and contain few, if any, small lymphocytes. Despite the absence of any thymic tissue all thymectomized animals grew normally.Thymectomized larvae developed relatively normal lymphoid organs. However, lymphoid depletion was apparent in the splenic red pulp and in the pharyngeal ventral cavity bodies. Examination of the lymphoid organs of post-metamorphic Xenopus revealed reduction in spleen size following thymectomy. Lymphoid depletion was evident in the splenic red pulp of many thymectomized toadlets and reduction in proportion of white to red pulp was also noted in a few of these animals. Absence of the thymus had no apparent effect on the histology of the other lymphoid organs examined.
