Notes: Abstract: The present study examines the influence of electroconvulsive seizure (ECS), as well as antidepressant drugs, on levels of serotonin2 (5-HT2) receptor mRNA in rat frontal cortex. Using a sensitive RNase protective assay, preliminary studies demonstrated the predicted regional distribution for the 5-HT2 receptor mRNA: levels of 5-HT2 mRNA were highest in frontal cortex (2.58 amol/μg of total RNA), intermediate in neostriatum, thalamus, and midbrain, and lowest in hippocampus, cerebellum, and choroid plexus. Chronic (10 or 14 days), but not acute (1 or 3 days), ECS treatment significantly increased levels of 5-HT2 receptor mRNA. ECS treatment resulted in a similar time-dependent up-regulation of 5-HT2 receptor ligand binding; chronic, but not acute, ECS treatment significantly increased levels of [3H]ketanserin ligand binding, confirming previous reports. Northern blot analysis demonstrated that 5-HT2 receptor mRNA occurs as two bands (∼5 and 6 kb in size), both of which were increased by chronic ECS treatment. The influence of antidepressant drug treatments on 5-HT2 receptor mRNA was also examined. Chronic fluoxetine treatment increased levels of 5-HT2 receptor mRNA, although levels of [3H]ketanserin ligand binding were not altered. In contrast, chronic administration of imipramine, mianserin, and tranylcypromine, treatments that decreased ligand binding, did not decrease levels of 5-HT2 receptor mRNA. In fact, mianserin treatment caused a small, but significant, increase in levels of receptor mRNA. The results suggest that ECS up-regulation of 5-HT2 receptor mRNA could underlie the increased density of 5-HT2 receptor binding sites in response to this treatment, but that other mechanisms likely operate in the down-regulation of 5-HT2 receptor ligand binding by antidepressant drug treatments.

Notes: A total of 2215 specimens of Ilisha africana (Bloch) were examined for the food habits of the species off the Lagos coast, Nigeria. Their food consisted mainly of crustaceans, fish and molluscs; less important in the stomach contents were insects, annelids, chaetognaths, coelenterates, urochordates and phytoplankton. The incidence of nematodes in the stomachs was low. Monthly variation of food as well as variation with fish size and water depth were examined, as was the relationship of food composition to components of the plankton fauna. Feeding habits of I. africana were compared with those Sardinella maderensis (Lowe), Galeoides decadatylus (Bloch), Brachydeuterus auritus (Val.) and Vomer setapinnis (Mitchill); there was an overall diversity in the diets of these fish species.

Notes: The maturation development, spawning period, oogenesis, fecundity and sex ratio of Ilisha africana off the Lagos Coast, Nigeria were investigated. Six macroscopic and seven microscopic stages of gonad maturity were identified. Maturity was attained at 12.0 cm total length. Breeding occurred throughout the year with the peak spawning between May and December. Oogenesis consisted of seven stages and breeding marks were observed in the species. Fecundity ranged between 2098 and 11 687 eggs. There was a slightly higher correlation between fecundity and weight than between fecundity and length. The egg diameter varied from 0.77 to 1.35 mm. The overall sex ratio was 1 male to 0.97 female. The females however predominated over the males during most months in the peak breeding period.

Description / Table of Contents: The thermoplastic nickel–titanium alloy Nitinol has excellent shape memory when transferred from deep-freeze temperatures to body temperature or even 45°C, which means that staples made of this material for use in internal fixation exert a lasting compressive effect after implantation. From October 1995 to January 1998 we performed 22 compression osteosynthesis operations on scaphoid bones. The indications were: dislocated fracture in 10 cases, in 6 of them with Quervain’s luxation fracture, and pseudarthroses in 12. In 10 osteosynthesis operations we used drilling wires in addition, for internal direction of the compressing force of the staples. After osteosynthesis 21 of the 22 scaphoids healed. Three clamps were removed after the bone had healed. One staple broke with the bone in an accident. Our first impressions suggest that thermoplastic Nitinol staples are ideal for compression osteosynthesis of the scaphoid bone for the treatment of displaced fractures or pseudarthroses in the middle third. Their use offers advantages over osteosynthesis with screws. Because our experience with these staples was so good we shortened the period of immobilization from 12 to 6 weeks.
Notes: Die sog.
