Notes: We discuss a SQUID holder designed for high magnetic shielding. We show how to estimate the attenuation of the magnetic field from the normal magnetic modes for an approximate geometry. The estimate agrees satisfactorily with the attenuation measured with a commercial rf SQUID installed in the holder. The holder attenuates external magnetic fields by more than 109 at the SQUID input. With the SQUID input shorted, the response to external fields is 10−5 Φ0/G.

Notes: Abstract Measurements of the magnetic Kapitza resistance between single crystals of CMN and lanthanum-diluted CMN in contact with ultrapure liquid3He are presented. The investigations were performed in the temperature range 2–100 mK and in magnetic fields up to 600 Oe. For the first time, a magnetic thermal coupling between bulk crystals with dimensions of up to 3 mm and liquid3He was observed. In the case of pure CMN and liquid3He below 7 mK, the relationR ∞ T n withn=4±1 is seen. A strong dependence ofR with magnetic field and Ce3+ content is found.

Notes: Abstract Low-field magnetic screening and breakdown fields have been measured in thick proximity-induced superconducting copper by means of dc magnetization and ac susceptibility in the temperature range 10 to 0.005 K. From the thickness and temperature dependence of the breakdown field the Cooper pair penetration depth in copper is obtained. This value isK N −1 =0.6/T μm, withT in kelvins. No saturation effects were observed in the screening length ρ, the breakdown fieldH b, or the supercooled fieldH sc down to the lowest temperatures.

Notes: Abstract We describe a second sound detector based on the observation of temperature-dependent magnetization changes in paramagnetic materials. The sensitive element consists of a small pill of powdered paramagnetic salt placed in a region of high magnetic field and surrounded by a superconducting pickup loop connected to a SQUID magnetometer. At 10 Hz, the ac sensitivity was estimated to be 3×10−9 K/√Hz, increasing to 1×10−10 K/√Hz for dc signals. The device is particularly useful for experiments near the lambda point, which can be approached much more closely than with superleak transducers.
