Abstract The molecule of a sesquiterpene lactone with the pinane skeleton consists of four puckered rings. The C(sp3)-O bond from the lactone ring is elongated to 1.500(7) Å. The presence of such a long bond explains the possibility of two directions of nucleophilic attack and the consequent formation of two products.Crystal data: C16H22O4;P212121;a=19.156(4),b=10.109(2),c=7.521(2) Å;R=0.059 for 1079 reflections.
