Notes: Abstract With the help of recent results in the mathematical theory of master equations, we present a rigorous derivation of the stochastic Glauber dynamics of Ising models from Hamiltonian quantum mechanics. A thermal bath is explicitly constructed and, as an illustration, the dynamics of the Ising-Weiss model is analyzed in the thermodynamic limit. We thus obtain an example of a nonequilibrium statistical mechanical system for which a link without mathematical gap can be established from microscopic quantum mechanics to a macroscopic irreversible thermodynamic process.

Notes: Abstract We show with simple arguments that, as a consequence of the Poisson equation, the correlations of a charged system at equilibrium decay faster than any inverse power, if they are integrable and monotonous at infinity. For all other longrange systems (with potentialφ(x)∼b¦x¦−s , ¦x¦ → ∞, 0〈s〈v,s≠} 2), the decay is bounded below by an inverse power.

Notes: Abstract Sum rules describing perfect screening at equilibrium in a classical plasma are extended to the time-displaced structure function of an inhomogeneous one-component plasma. We find that there are long-wavelength modes which oscillate undamped with a single frequency $$\bar \omega $$ , $$\bar \omega ^2 $$ being an angular average of the squared plasma frequency at infinity. Our results are derived heuristically, allowing also for quantum effects, from linear response theory, and rigorously from the classical BBGKY hierarchy under some reasonable assumptions on the spatial decay of correlations. Special cases are investigated, in particular plasmas bounded by walls of varied shapes.

Notes: Abstract We study the diamagnetic surface currents of particles in thermal equilibrium submitted to a constant magnetic field. The current density of independent electrons with Boltzmann (respectively Fermi) statistics has a gaussian (respectively exponential) bound for its fall off into the bulk. For a system of interacting particles at low activity with Boltzmann statistics, the current density is localized near to the boundary and integrable when the two-body potential decays as |x|−α, α 〉4, α〉4, in three dimensions. In all cases, the integral of the current density is independent of the nature of the confining wall and correctly related to the bulk magnetisation. The results hold for hard and soft walls and all field strength. The analysis relies on the Feynman-Kac-Ito representation of the Gibbs state and on specific properties of the Brownian bridge process.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that equilibrium states of classical particles with short range interactions are Euclidean invariant whenever their correlation functions have a clustering which is integrable. The relation between invariance and clustering is analysed for spatial rotations and internal rotational degrees of freedom. The analysis is then extended to the case of long range interactions, including the Coulomb force and jellium systems.

Notes: Abstract We study the asymptotic behavior of the charge fluctuations 〈(Q Λ − 〈(Q Λ〉)2〉 in infinite classical systems of charged particles, and show, under certain clustering assumptions, that if the charge fluctuations are not extensive, then they are necessarily of the order of the surface ¦∂λ¦. Moreover, when the canonical sum rules that are typical for equilibrium states of particles interacting with long-range forces hold true, we prove a central limit theorem for the normalized charge variable ¦∂λ¦−1/2(〈(Q Λ − 〈(Q Λ〉)) in two and three dimensions. In one dimension, the probability distribution of the charge itself converges. The latter case is illustrated by the example of the one-dimensional Coulomb gas.

Notes: Abstract We introduce a generalization of the BBGKY equation to define the equilibrium states for systems with long-range forces and study the properties of such states. We show that there are properties typical of short-range forces (shape independence, normal fluctuations, asymptotic behavior of correlation functions) and others which are typical of long-range forces (possible shape dependence, neutrality, sum rules and screening, abnormal fluctuations, boundedness of the internal electric field). If the force decreases at infinity faster than the Coulomb force, the properties will be those typical of short-range forces; on the other hand, if the force decreases at infinity as the Coulomb force or slower, the properties will be those typical of long-range forces.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that any equilibrium state of classical charged particles with correlation having a spatial decay faster than 1/¦x¦v+2 in dimensionv=2, 3 obeys the Stillinger-Lovett second moment condition. Under the same clustering hypothesis, arbitrary localized external charge distributions are completely shielded.
