Notes: Structural characterization of nanosized W–Ti–O rf magnetron-sputtered films was carried out by means of electron microscopy techniques and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy. The evolution of the W–Ti–O films turned out to be quite complex as several nanophases were determined. Depending on annealing temperature and W/Ti abundance, stable nanophases of WO3, TiO, and TiO2 have been reliably achieved. The investigation highlighted the reason why the films remained nanostructured in spite of a relatively high annealing temperature. In fact, formation of a dispersed TiO nanophase in the W–Ti–O layers was recognized to inhibit grain growth and promote secondary recrystallization. This resulted in exaggerated growth of WO3 crystallites over the nanostructured layers. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: One of the basic parameters of the rock formation surrounding a fluid-filled borehole to be estimated is the shear-wave velocity. In the present contribution a novel method for carrying out this estimate, based on the use of linear prediction techniques, is proposed. It is assumed that the shape and energy content of each wave can be accurately modelled by an ARMA (Auto Regressive Moving Average) impulsive process and by an appropriate delay. The overall seismogram is then considered to be a multiple impulsive ARMA process and the estimation is carried out by using the residual at the output of an extended version of the Burg lattice predictor. The resulting algorithm is very effective as illustrated by several examples performed on synthetic and real seismograms.

Notes: The need for synthetic seismograms arises in several acoustic well-logging contexts. We propose a numerical algorithm for computing the seismograms, characterized by a very reduced computational cost. Unlike previous contributions appearing in the technical literature, the proposed algorithm is based on a non-uniform sampling step and on linear interpolation for computing the integrals involved in the synthesis.

Notes: Using the CZ technique we have set up a 3-grain silicon ingot growing process which allows to obtain very large grains with a preselected orientation in order to facilitate thin slicing, a unanimously agreed upon requirement for photovoltaic applications. The 3-grain ingots we obtained are particularly suitable for this aim since no cleavage plane {111} crosses the crystal obliquely to the slicing direction. Furthermore, this type of ingot allows a high growth rate ascribable to the verticality of its {111} side planes and has electrical and structure properties very close to those of single-crystalline material.

Notes: Geochemical investigations carried out at the Campano–Lucano Apennine (Southern Italy) revealed the presence of fluids composed of a mixing between components of shallow and deep origin, where mantle-derived helium is also detectable. For the gas phase, the deep component is represented by both CH4 and CO2-rich gases, while the shallow one is N2-dominated. Coinciding with the 3 April 1996 ML=4.9 earthquake, the CH4-rich component mixed with the shallow, N2-dominated one at the Tramutola well (Val d’Agri), displaying wide variations in mixing proportions. In contrast, no significant modifications occurred in relation to the 1998 ML=5.5 event. According to the collected data, an earthquake-related transient modification of local crustal permeability is suggested for the 1996 event. The different crustal response to the two events may be related to different stress distributions around the epicentres or may suggest a different tectonic connection between the Val d’Agri and the two earthquake locations.

Notes: The compositional data collected at three thermal springs in the Umbria region over a sampling period lasting two and a half hydrological years included the entire seismic sequence striking the Central Apennines (Italy) in 1997–1998. Wide temporal variations in the chemical composition and temperature of thermal waters were observed at all the sampling sites. The widest were recorded at the Triponzo sampling site, where a temperature drop of 2 °C and 20 °C preceded, by 4 days and 2 days, respectively, the occurrence of the event characterized by the deepest hypocentre of the entire seismic sequence. Despite such a macroscopic preseismic anomaly, the recorded variations were not related to single seismic events or to the release rate of the seismic energy. They actually seem to have been induced by permeability variations related to crustal deformation in the absence of elastic energy release and were thus linked to the whole seismogenic process.

Notes: The Apennines comprise a Neogen—Quaternary accretionary prism that shows several anomalies with respect to classic alpine-type mountain belts, namely (i) low elevation, (ii) a shallow new Moho below the core of the belt, (iii) high heat flow in the internal parts, (iv) mainly sedimentary cover involved in the prism, (v) a deep foredeep and (vi) a fully developed back-arc basin. The suction exerted by a relatively eastward migrating mantle can determine the eastward retreat of the subduction zone and an asthenospheric wedging at the retreating subduction hinge. Heat flow, geochemical and seismological data support the presence of a hot mantle wedge underlying the western side of the Apenninic accretionary prism. A thermal model of the belt with foreland dipping isotherms fits with deepening of the seismicity toward the east. Mantle volatiles signatures are also widespread in springs along the Apennines.

Notes: Two cases of atypical juvenile polyposis are described in males of 9 months and 25 years-of-age. The first was associated with congenital megacolon and presented as juvenile polyps with features suggesting mild dysplasia. In the second case six histological lesions are found: 1 hyperplastic polyps; 2 juvenile polyps; 3 hyperplastic polyps with adenomatous areas; 4 juvenile polyps with areas of dysplastic epithelium; 5 adenomas; and 6 adenocarcinomas. On the basis of the morphological features we propose a pathogenetic sequence of focal mucosal hyperplasia to adenoma and carcinoma through stages of non-neoplastic and non premalignant polyps. Finally, the possibility that hyperplastic epithelium can in some circumstances have a greater dysplastic potential than normal colorectal mucosa is raised.

Notes: A primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the spleen was studied by light and electron microscopy and is believed to be the first reported. The neoplasm was predominantly fibroblastic, with a characteristic storiform pattern, and included histiocyte-like cells, giant and foam cells confirmed by ultrastructural studies. Additionally, undifferentiated cells, intermediate cells and myofibroblasts were seen. The differential diagnosis from other sarcomas and the histogenesis of this tumour are discussed.
