Conclusions 1. A study has been made of the interaction between aerosils with varying degree of surface hydration and n-butanol vapor, and the optimum reaction conditions have been determined. 2. A “fluid bed” apparatus for preparing butoxyaerosil has been described. 3. IR spectroscopy has been used to study the thermal stability of butoxylated modified coatings when heated in air. It has been shown that rupture of ester layer begins at 175°C, and complete breakdown sets in at 240°C. 4. The thickening power of butoxyl derivatives of aerosils has been studied in greases prepared with IS-12 petroleum oils; it has been established that the thickening power of the modified aerosil increases as the specific surface of the SiO2 increases.
