    Notes: In 22 nickel-sensitive subjects, 57 metal clothing objects were said to be not tolerated (37) or tolerated (20). They were analysed by X-ray energy dispersion in electron microscopy, and by the dimethylglyoxime spot test. The correlation between the analytical results and the statements of patients is discussed. Patch tests to nickel-plated metal samples with various thicknesses of chromium (0.25 μ to 1 μ) or glod/copper/cadmium (0.5 μ) were performed in human subjects or in guinea pigs sensitive to nickel. Surface-plating and anticorrosive techniques, as well as the results in nickel-sensitive subjects, are described and discussed. Good tolerance will not be obtained that appropriate regulations will prohibit the use of nickel in the manufacture of clothing objects.

    Notes: Abstract. Heart rate variability is a noninvasive index of the neural activity of the heart. The present study examined heart rate variability indices in 210 infants and children aged 3 days to 14 years to obtain normal ranges for all age classes. Heart rate variability was measured by calculating mean RR interval over the length of the analysis, mean RR interval during quiet sleep, 5 time-domain (SDNN, SDNN-i, SDANN-i, r-MSSD, pNN50), and 4 frequency-domain (VLF, LF, HF, LF/HF ratio) indices. Our data show a significant positive correlation between all indices and the mean RR interval over the length of the analysis, except for the LF/HF ratio for which the correlation was binomial. A positive power correlation was also found between all parameters and age. The multiple correlation analysis confirmed the independent effect of age and mean RR interval on the heart rate variability. These data in a healthy pediatric population confirm a progressive maturation of the autonomic nervous system during childhood and may be utilized to examine the effects of underlying disease processes or therapeutic interventions on cardiac autonomic tone during infancy and childhood.

    Notes: Abstract Heart rate variability (HRV) represents a noninvasive parameter for studying the autonomic control of the heart. Cardiac patients have a complex autonomic disturbance. The relation of HRV to this abnormality in children with congenital heart disease (CHD) has not yet been examined. The present study examined HRV indices from 24 h Holter recordings in 258 children with an operated or non-operated CHD, to determine their differences as an indicator of the severity of heart disease. The latter was defined clinically as New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class I to IV and haemodynamically by invasive parameters. Five time-domain measures (SDNN, SDNNi, SDANNi, rMSSD and pNN50) and three frequency-domain measures (LF, HF and balance LF/HF) were compared with normal ranges. HRV was reduced in children with CHD, except in patients of NYHA class I. The level of reduction depended on the NYHA functional class. None of the measures was significantly related to haemodynamic data. Conclusion Heart rate variability is reduced in children with Congenital heart disease depending on the functional limitation but not on haemodynamic disturbances. Heart rate variability indices are sensitive markers of the clinical state.

    Notes: Abstract This retrospective study attempts to assess the size and growth pattern of the pulmonary artery about 1 year after neonatal arterial switch operation for simple transposition of the great arteries. Sixty-seven patients underwent cardiac catheterization, including catheterization of the right and left pulmonary arteries, and right ventricular angiography an average of 13.9 months after arterial switch operation. In 34 of these patients pre-operative right ventricular angiocardiograms were available. The diameter of the main pulmonary artery and that of its proximal right and left branches were measured. The values were compared to those of normal children matched for body surface area, taken from the literature and, for the branch values, related to the degree of branch stenosis and to the corresponding values, measured on pre-operative angiocardiograms. The cross-section of the main pulmonary artery after arterial switch operation with Lecompte manoeuvre becomes oval. The branches of the pulmonary artery are sometimes underdeveloped and this finding is related to branch stenosis. The ratio of the branch gradients is inversely proportional to the growth ratio of both branches while the pre- and postoperative Nakata indices are identical. Conclusion The Lecompte manoeuvre induces a flattening of the main pulmonary artery with concomitant reduction of its cross-sectional area. There is also frequently trivial or rarely moderate branch pulmonary stenosis which is accompanied by growth retardation of the concerned branch.
