    Notes: Abstract  The Department of Epidemiology, which forms part of the French National Institute for Research and Safety (INRS), is involved in research on occupational risks. It provides results of industry-based epidemiological studies focused on the relationship between occupational exposure and diseases of the respiratory system, central and peripheral nervous systems and cancer. This paper describes the Quality Assurance System developed by our department, which has been successfully maintained and extended since being granted ISO 9002 certification by the French Association for Quality Assurance. The quality system includes procedures specific to epidemiological study conduct and scientific peer reviews. It has been designed in order to meet the required ISO elements, including quality aims and policy, quality procedures for management of personnel, sub-contractors and facilities, nonconformities, corrective and preventive actions, archiving and traceability and planning of internal quality audits. Improvements in management, technical and service quality have resulted from this process. Although epidemiological studies differ markedly from industrial production for which the standards were originally drawn up, we have found that Quality Assurance is both applicable and useful in epidemiological research on occupational risks. Therefore, we conclude that a certified Quality Assurance Scheme including scientific peer reviews can be recommended to ensure reliable epidemiological results.

    Notes: Summary An epidemiological study of 774 workers in seven eastern France cotton textile factories was conducted to determine the prevalence of acute respiratory disorders. From nine non-textile companies, 464 workers, stratified as to sex, age and tabacco consumption participated in the study as a control population. A questionnaire designed to elicit the respiratory symptoms (in particular the Monday tightness characterizing byssinosis) was administred to the 1238 workers. Peak-expiratory-flow (PEF) measurement was made for each subject, exposed and non-exposed, before the start of the shift on the day of the worker's return to work and repeated at the end of the shift. The PEF's variations during the workshift were studied. Present Monday tightness was mentioned by 48 cotton exposed workers (6.2%) and by 9 non-exposed (1.9%) (P 〈 0.001). A 10% decrease in PEF during the shift was present in 63 cotton exposed workers (8.1%) and in 10 non-exposed (2.1%) (P〈 0.001). For the exposed population, Monday tightness was analysed using multiple logistic regression, showing an absence of a link with smoking, an increased occurrence after 20 years of exposure (OR = 7.3) and a link with current job (more frequent among those with the dustiest jobs) (OR = 4.9). The multiple logistic analysis of a 10% decrease in PEF showed effects of smoking habits (OR =1.86). It also showed a link with “highly polluted job” history (OR = 2.7), but especially with present job (OR = 3.4). The absence of a constant link between Monday tightness and drop of the PEF was found.

    Notes: Background: Numerous studies have described the anatomy of the large lymphoid aggregates of bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue (BALT) in rabbits and rats. Less work has been performed on other immunocompetent areas of the respiratory tract, and available data again mostly describe rabbit or rat tissues. Little is known therefore of the microanatomy of the mouse lung immune system.Methods: We report a study, devised in order to establish the immunohistological characteristics of normal healthy mice lungs, performed on whole lungs from 22 mice of various strains and/or ages. Snap frozen tissues were serially sectioned and analysed using histochemistry and immunohistological techniques. Scattered macrophages, IgA plasma cells, B and T cells were enumerated in each sample.Results: The largest population was that of macrophages. B-cells were numerous in all mice but 3 adults. T-cells were always present, L3T4+ often more numerous than Lyt2+ cells. Small lymphoid aggregates, composed of B or T cells (L3T4+ and Lyt2+) were seen in all mice, in the vicinity of a bronchiole and a vein. In 12/22 mice, a peculiarly elongated para-esophagal lymph node with large peripheral B-cell nodules and medullary T-cells was observed. In the five strains of mice studied, large variations were noted, affecting all the cell types studied, and related either to age or strain.Conclusion: Besides providing a qualitative description and quantitative analysis of immunocompetent cells, this work reports age and strain-related variations in these cells' distribution. These data could be relevant for studies involving the analysis of mice respirtory immune responses to environmental antigens. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
