Notes: The deexcitation (quenching) of He+ ions in the 2s metastable state by collision with H2, N2, O2, CO, and NO molecules is studied using the time dependent perturbation theory. Velocity dependence of quenching cross section is presented. The results are compared with the available experimental data of Prior and Wang.

Notes: Abstract Changes in water quality along the Sone River, which is polluted by effluents from the Orient Paper Mills (OPM), Amlai, M.P., India were studied in the present work. The water samples from fifteen stations, covering a distance of about 216 km along the river course were subjected to hierarchical cluster analysis to determine similarity relations with respect to seven water quality parameters. Maximum pollution was observed up to 30 km downstream. Improvement in water quality was registered further downstream due to self-recovery and dilution. The greatest variability was observed between water samples taken at the OPM uptake site and at the effluent mixing point located 2 km downstream. Maximum similarity was found between stations located 2.0 and 2.1 km; 2.3 and 2.5 km; and 2.7 and 3.0 km downstream.

Notes: Abstract A distorted wave (DW) approach is used to study the effect of plasma on the electron impact excitation of helium-like ions: C V, N VI, and O VII. The Debye-Huckel model for plasma screening is used. Collision strengths for the 11 S–21 P transition are presented for two values of screening length (ΛZ=10 and ΛZ=20).

Notes: Abstract The excitation of H(1s–2s) and He(11 S–21 S) by electron impact in the presence of a nonresonant laser field is studied in the framework of the perturbation theory. The wavelength variation of the total cross section is presented at incident electron energies of 100 eV and 200 eV for hydrogen and 200 eV for helium. The use of pseudostates as intermediate states in the study of excitation of hydrogen is also investigated.

Notes: Abstract A two-potential localised exchange (TPLE) approach is used to study the role of spin dependence in the inelastic scattering of electrons by lithium atoms at intermediate energies. Results are presented for the spin-resolved orientation parameters (L ⊥ S ,L ⊥ T , andL ⊥) in the polarized-electron impact resonant (2s–2p) excitation of polarized-lithium atom. Results are also obtained for the depolarization (P′ e /P e) in the polarized-electron impact resonant (2s–2p) and nonresonant (2s–3p) transition in unpolarized lithium atom. Further in the case when the fine structure splitting of the target is resolved, we also investigate the left-right scattering asymmetryS A (1/2) for the polarized-electron superelastically scattered from unpolarized 2p 1/2 and 3p 1/2 states.
