Notes: Abstract Bump mapping produces realistic shading by perturbing normal vectors to a surface, but does not show the shadows that the bumps cast on nearby parts of the same surface. In this paper, these shadows are found from precomputed tables of horizon angles, listing, for each position entry, the elevation of the horizon in a sampled collection of directions. These tables are made for bumps on a standard flat surface, and then a transformation is developed so that the same tables can be used for an arbitrary curved parametrized surface patch. This necessitates a new method for scaling the bump size to the patch size. Incremental calculations can be used in a scan line algorithm for polygonal surface approximations. The errors in the bump shadows are discussed, as well as their anti-aliasing. (An earlier version of this article appeared as Max [10].)

Notes: Abstract This paper discusses a three-pass raster motion-blur algorithm (and some generalizations) in the context of texture-mapped polygons and its application to blurring objects and surfaces made up of multiple polygons, which may move in different directions.

Notes: Abstract Current shading methods for polygonal approximations to smooth surfaces reveal the polygon edges by lack of smoothness in the shading, highlights, texture, reflection lines, intersections, profiles, and shadows. These defects are eliminated here by interpolating the perspective depth in screen coordinates with aC 1 piecewise-polynomial function, defined over triangles in the screen plane. The three eye-space components of the surface normal, and the two texture parameters, are separately interpolated with similarC 1 functions. For smooth intersections, the depth comparison test of Watkins' scan-line algorithm is replaced by a simple test which uses closed-form solutions to polynomials of degree 2, 3, or 4. When the scan lines arise from scan planes containing the eye and the light source, a version of the shadow volume algorithm can also generate smooth cast shadows.

Notes: [Auszug] IN 1611, Kepler1 described the face-centred cubic arrangement (Fig. 1), and claimed that it was the densest way of packing equal spheres in three dimensions. This claim defied proof until W. Hsiang tackled it last year. Face-centred cubic (f.c.c.) packing is used by greengrocers to display ...

Notes: [Auszug] SIR - As a sufferer from presbyopia, I have longed for the 'adaptive optics' spectacles proposed by David Jones (Daedalus, Nature 352, 287; 1991). I have two suggestions for improvements. First, the eye has significant chromatic aberration, so the infrared image will have to be slightly out of ...

Notes: [Auszug] SIR-Vance Tucker (Nature 337, 605; 1989) notes that few readers keep stereoscopes handy and that only a quarter of those he surveyed could view stereo-pairs without one. The main function of a stereoscope is to counteract the normal correlation between the focus and convergence muscles in the ...

Notes: Abstract This review article surveys recent work on computer representation of molecular surfaces. Several different algorithms are discussed for producing vector or raster drawings of space-filling models formed as the union of spheres. Other smoother surfaces are also considered.

Notes: A new method of computing the geometry of a cyclic polymer from internal coordinates is discussed, which is particularly useful if the molecule has a center of inversion symmetry. When applied to the structure of valinomycin, the calculation is reduced to solving one transcendental equation in one variable.
