Notes: Abstract The veiled region in Czochralski sapphire has been examined for defects by optical micrography, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe analysis and X-ray topography. High optical scattering in the veiled region is found to be due to a large number of cavities. Some dislocation reactions have been observed in the X-ray topographs. High strain fields associated with cavities are also revealed by the topographs indicating that they contain entrapped gas at high pressure. This pressure is three orders of magnitude greater than that predicted from surface tension considerations.

Notes: Although dynamic mechanical properties of thermoplastic polymers have been studied in great detail and much has been learned about their structure, little has been done in the field of thermosetting resins. The present study involves the use of dynamic methods for determining certain salient features about epoxy resins. A torsion pendulum operating in the range of one cycle per second was used to measure the properties of various epoxy systems. The instrument enabled rapid determination of both internal friction and shear moduli. Two transition peaks in the dynamic loss tangent were observed; one occurring at -60°C, the other at 165°C when a conventional epoxy resin was cured with m-phenylenediamine. The low temperature peak was effectively demonstrated as due to the glycidyl ether portion of the cured resin system. The major peak or glass transition temperature could be varied in accord with the substituents on the central carbon bridge of the bisphenol portion of the molecule and to a lesser extent by the degree of cross-linking.

Notes: Fiber reinforced composite structures have gained a significant position as materials of construction for the aerospace industry. It thus follows that large expenditures of funds and human lives are dependent on the reliability of these products. An important step in gaining confidence in a part is knowing that the starting prepreg has the same chemical formulation in each lot of material and that each lot has been processed in the same manner. This can be accomplished by physiochemical characterization. The techniques described herein were developed for 177°C (350°F) epoxy matrix systems. However, the methods form a basis for developing similar procedures for other types of matrices.

Notes: The influence of bulk physical properties on the bond strength of an adhesive was studied. A conventional epoxy resin when cured with various mixtures of phthalic acid and anhydride exhibits maximum bond strength when the curing agent is 75% acid and 25% anhydride. This effect is explained on the basis of physical properties of the unfilled resin systems. Most significant of these were the heat distortion temperature and the compressive break and yield strengths.
