Notes: Abstract Capillary gas chromatography indicated the presence of (Z)-7-dodecenyl alcohol and (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate in the abdominal tip extracts of female Cornutiplusia circumflexa (L.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae: Plusiinae) moths. Gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry and dimethyl disulfide derivatization confirmed the structure of these two principal pheromone components. In a flight-tunnel bioassay, a 5:1 blend of alcohol and acetate elicited the complete courtship sequence by males. The response was comparable to that evoked by a live virgin female, but males spent significantly longer time at calling females than at the synthetic source. The 5:1 blend was also attractive to male C. circumflexa in the field, as indicated by catches in traps baited with this mixture. (Z)-7-dodecenyl alcohol alone was slightly attractive whereas (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate alone was completely inactive. C. circumflexa is the first reported Plusiinae species which utilizes (Z)-7-dodecenyl alcohol as the major pheromone component.

Notes: Abstract Attraction of female Mediterranean fruifly (medfly) to ammonia and to protein baits was studied with an olfactometer. Ammonia bait (1 cc/trap) proved to be an effective lure. The maximum number of females was caught in traps loaded with 0.01 M ammonia solution with a release rate of 5.28 μg/cc/h. A positive correlation was found between female catch and the ammonia release rate of various protein baits, especially from dry protein hydrolysate of which casein hydrolysate was the most effective. However, casein hydrolysate was less attractive than certain ammonia solutions having a lower rate of ammonia release. Elevation of the pH of the liquid commercial baits, Buminal and Naziman, increased the latter's efficacy as medfly baits but the increased stimulation could not be strictly correlated with the increased rate of ammonia release. It is therefore suggested that medfly olfactory response to protein baits is affected not only by ammonia but by other volatiles as well.

Notes: Abstract. Human trophoblast produce GnRH and its precursor, immunologically and chemically identical to those of hypothalamic origin. Placental GnRH stimulates human chorionic gonadotropin secretion by the syncytiotrophoblast. It is known that GnRH analogue has negative effect on early rat pregnancy and may cause abortion through its action on the corpus luteum. A significant reduction of progesterone production was found in pregnant rats treated with GnRH agonist. GnRH caused a significant decrease in the maximal contraction intensity of nonpregnant and pregnant uterine muscle strip, following the action of oxytocin and acetylcholine. It was observed that treatment of pregnant rat with pharmacological doses of GnRH was able to delay parturition. Experimentally, GnRH significantly inhibited the release of placental prostaglandins E and F and thromboxane B 2 in a dose dependent fashion. Maternal circulating GnRH levels at 25 – 35 weeks of gestation were significantly higher in women who later had post-term pregnancies. In an other study maternal circulating GnRH concentration was found to be significantly lower in four patients who developed preterm labor and delivery. Low doses of GnRH in pregnant rats produced inhibition of postpartum lordosis behavior.

Notes: Summary Beta-thromboglobulin (BTG) has been shown to be a specific platelet protein and can be used as a marker of platelet activation in preeclampsia. Concomitant studies of BTG levels in plasma and urine were performed with eight primiparous severe preeclamptic patients and eight normal primiparous women matched for age. The mean plasma BTG in the severe preeclamptic patients was 186.62±29.93 ng/ml, and in the control group 45.38±31.84 ng/ml. TheP-value for the difference was highly significant (P=0.000). In contrast, the mean urine BTG in the study group was 8.42±4.61 ng/ml, while the mean value for the control group was similar, 5.00±3.20 ng/ml. TheP-value for the difference was not significant (0.05〈P〈0.10). These results show that urinary BTG cannot be considered an indicator of platelet activation in severe preeclampsia. A low rather express renal impairment. Failure of BTG renal clearance would contribute to further raising the level of plasma BTG.

Notes: Abstract. The purpose of this study was to determine whether preterm parturition is associated with changes in maternal plasma and amniotic fluid dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate concentrations. A cross sectional study was constructed according to the gestational age at admission and response to tocolysis. Group 1 consisted of women admitted with preterm labor and intact membranes between 28 and 31 weeks and 6 days gestational age (n=40). Group 2 included 40 patients with preterm labor between 32 and 36 weeks gestational age. Both groups were classified into two subgroups: preterm delivery within seven days of admission and term delivery. Commercially available immunoassay kits validated for amniotic fluid analysis of DHEA-S, were used to measure maternal plasma and amniotic fluid DHEA-S concentrations. Maternal plasma DHEA-S concentrations were significantly higher in women with preterm labor who delivered preterm than in those who delivered at term. (Group 1: median 800 ng/ml [range 100–1100] vs. median 200 ng/ml [70–800], P〈0.001; Group 2: median 850 ng/ml [300–1700] vs. median 300 ng/ml [90–1100], P〈0.001). In contrast, no significant differences were detected in amniotic fluid DHEA-S concentrations. Our data suggest that the rise in maternal plasma DHEA-S concentrations observed in patients with preterm labor may be related to the effects of stress during labor.

Notes: Abstract. Bacterial vaginosis is currently the most prevalent form of vaginal infection of reproductive age women. The etiology of bacterial vaginosis has not yet been defined. However, clear criteria for diagnosis and treatment have been established in the absence as well as in presence of pregnancy. Recent data show an association between bacterial vaginosis and preterm labor and delivery. This review outlines the role of bacterial vaginosis in preterm birth and other pregnancy complications.

Notes: Summary A case of Cushing's syndrome in pregnancy due to adrenal adenoma is described. Despite the poor prognosis and the fact that treatment was delayed until after delivery, a normal term infant was born and maternal outcome was good.
