    Notes: We evaluated the noise level of fourteen air-driven handpieces, six low speed (less than 20,000 rev/min) and eight high speed (greater than 160,000 rev/min), with respect to a three-directional co-ordinate system and distances of 6, 12 and 18 in. in each chosen direction. A two-way analysis of variance of the noise level between handpieces and positions indicates that large significant differences exist amongst handpieces and in different positions, and that interaction is just barely significant. The ranking and least significant differences for the mean of all handpieces v. position and for the mean of all positions v. handpiece were compared with the results for the ranking and significances from the one-way ANOVAS for each handpiece v. position and for each position v. handpiece.A trend exists with some of the handpieces of straight design (all low speed) for increased noise levels in a direction perpendicular to the handpieces and decreased levels in a direction parallel to the handpieces. For handpieces of angled design (all high speed) both directions parallel and perpendicular (the perpendicular to the longitudinal turbine axis) to the rotor axis indicate increased noise levels. The parallel direction includes the exiting air from the exhaust port. The perpendicular direction can be indicative of an aerodynamic factor associated with the established air flow patterns. The extremes in noise level were 56.8 dBA for a low-speed handpiece of straight design at the 18 in. distance in a direction parallel to the handpiece, and 87.3 dBA for a high speed handpiece at the 6 in. distance in a perpendicular direction.

    Notes: Abstract A member of Ising's family of large transposing elements (TEs) has inserted into, or very near, the crinkled (ck, 2–50) locus. This TE (TE36) carries functional alleles of both the white and roughest loci, and causes a hypomorphic mutation of ck. The TE is visible in polytene chromosomes as a two-banded insertion between 35B9 and 35C1. These bands show homology to foldback (FB) elements by in situ hybridization. All spontaneous losses of TE36 remain mutant for ck and retain sequences homologous to FB at the site of TE's insertion. TE36 carries only one functional copy of w +, by the criterion that z w, TE36/ + flies are wild-type for eye color but z w; TE36/TE36 flies are zeste. This white+ gene is dosage compensated since w/Y; TE36/+ males have twice as much eye pigment as w/w; TE36/ + females. A form of the TE that has four polytene chromosome bands and expresses twice as much pigment as TE36 has been recovered. However, its white genes are not suppressed by zeste.

    Notes: Abstract TE146 is a transposing element (TE) consisting of six polytene chromosome bands that has inserted into the no-ocelli (noc 2∶50) locus. This member of Ising's TE family carries two copies of the white and roughest loci. TE146 is lost from noc with a spontaneous frequency of approximately 1 in 22000 chromosomes. All spontaneous losses are accompanied by the reversion of the noc mutation associated with the TE. The TE is associated with fold-back (FB) sequences. The losses of TE146 retain fold-back homology at noc. Of 26 γ-ray-induced losses of TE146, 16 are gross deletions, removing loci neighboring noc and ten are not. The non-deleted γ-ray-induced losses are either noc − and rst + or noc + and rst −. The white+ genes of TE146 are dosage compensated since w/Y; TE146/+ and w/w; TE146/+ flies are sexually dimorphic for eye color. These w + genes are also suppressed by zeste since z w; TE146/+ flies have zeste-colored eyes.

    Notes: Abstract Few studies have been carried out on the changes in biomechanical loading on low-back tissues during prolonged lifting. The purpose of this paper was to develop a model for continuously estimating erector spinae muscle loads during repetitive lifting and lowering tasks. The model was based on spine kinematics and bilateral lumbar and thoracic erector spinae electromyogram (EMG) signals and was developed with the data from eight male subjects. Each subject performed a series of isometric contractions to develop extensor moments about the low back. Maximum voluntary contractions (MVCs) were used to normalize all recorded EMG and moment time-histories. Ramp contractions were used to determine the non-linear relationship between extensor moments and EMG amplitudes. In addition, the most appropriate low-pass filter cut-off frequencies were calculated for matching the rectified EMG signals with the moment patterns. The mean low-pass cut-off frequency was 2.7 (0.4) Hz. The accuracy of the non-linear EMG-based estimates of isometric extensor moment were tested with data from a series of six rapid contractions by each subject. The mean error over the duration of these contractions was 9.2 (2.6)% MVC. During prolonged lifting sessions of 20 min and of 2 h, a model was used to calculate changes in muscle length based on monitored spine kinematics. EMG signals were first processed according to the parameters determined from the isometric contractions and then further processed to account for the effects of instantaneous muscle length and velocity. Simple EMG estimates were found to underestimate peak loading by 9.1 (4.0) and 25.7 (11.6)% MVC for eccentric and concentric phases of lifting respectively, when compared to load estimates based on the mechanically corrected EMG. To date, the model has been used to analyze over 5300 lifts.

    Notes: Abstract A mutant Chinese hamster cell clone has been isolated from an S phase culture. This clone, ts154, could not replicate DNA at nonpermissive temperature (39°C), although it synthesized DNA normally at permissive temperature (33°C). After transfer to 39°, ts154 cells replicated DNA semiconservatively through precisely two complete rounds and divided twice before they ceased DNA synthesis and further growth. The mutation in ts154 affects DNA replication specifically, as its rates of cellular transcription, its ability to support growth of vesicular stomatitis virus, and its ribo- and deoxyribonucleoside triphosphate pools were normal at 39°. Cultures of ts154 resumed DNA replication within 6 h when shifted from 39° to 33°, even after 78 h at the nonpermissive temperature. Upon return to 33°, mutant cells achieved a normal steady-state rate of DNA synthesis by 10 h, suggesting that they had come to rest within G1 phase at 39°. Resumption of DNA synthesis and growth after a shift-down to 33° were sensitive to cycloheximide in ts154, and thus likely required synthesis of new protein.
