    Notes: The genetic basis of the restriction imposed on T cell mediating acquired antimicrobial resistance and delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) to Listeria in the rat was investigated. Sharing of MHC-coded genes between donors of sensitized T cells and antigen-stimulated recipients was both necessary and sufficient for efficient transfer of both resistance and DTH. Evidence to support this assumption was derived from experiments involving allogeneic transfers within major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-compatible strains and across MHC-barriers. Further support came from linkage studies with backcrossed rats and with the progeny of F1 rats mated with an unrelated strain. An unexpected difference in the compatibility requirements for effective transfer of DTH and resistance was noted in experiments involving the BI strain (formerly called B3). Thus, while B-region compatibility was obligatory for expression of DTH in recipients of sensitized T cells, considerable levels of protection could be transferred to either A-region or B-region compatible hosts.

Desde Diciembre 1960 hasta Diciembre 1961 se han realizado estudios de ciertos de la ecología física de las lagunas de la zona supra-litoral de Taylors Mistake, cerca de Christchurch y de Goose Bay y South Bay Kaikoura, Nueva Zelanda. 2. Se han observado fluctuaciones en salinidad, temperatura, tension de oxigeno y concentración de hidrogeno ion. 3. Se observo con frecuencia una estratificaci'on en la salinidad de las lagunas. La estraficac'ion era producida por agua de baja salinidad depositandose sobre aqua de mayor salinidad ya existence en la laguna. 4. Las lagunas mostraban con frecuencia estratificación en temperatura y en oxigeno. Las temperaturas y las tensiones de oxigeno de las lagunas eran influenciados por la estratificación de la salinidad. 5. Son discutidas las relaciones entre condiciones salinas de estas lagunas y las de la Isla de Man y de la costa del Báltico.

From December 1960 to December 1961 studies were made of aspects of the physical ecology of pools of the splash zone at Taylors Mistake, near Christchurch and at Goose Bay and South Bay Kaikoura, New Zealand. 2. Fluctuations in salinity, temperature, oxygen tension and hydrogen ion concentration within pools have been recorded. 3. Salinity layering was common in the pools. Layering was established by water of lower salinity coming to lie upon more saline water already in pools. 4. Pools often showed temperature and oxygen stratification. Temperatures and oxygen tension within pools were influenced by salinity layering. 5. The relationships of the salinity conditions in these pools to those on the Isle of Man and the Baltic coast are discussed.

    Notes: Summary The innervation of the gut of the venerid bivalve mollusc, Chione stutchburyi, has been examined by fluorescence histochemistry, electron microscopy and autoradiography. Specific green and yellow varicose fluorescent fibres indicate the presence of dopaminergic and serotonergic axons, respectively. Three different types of axons can be distinguished by the morphological characteristics of their vesicles. Type I axons contain predominantly small granular vesicles (average diameter 65 nm), Type II axons possess large granular vesicles (average diameter 100 nm) and Type III axons contain large opaque vesicles (average diameter 150 nm). The granular vesicles in both Types I and II axons react positively to dichromate, and their granularity is reduced by reserpine indicating that they are monoaminergic. Only Type I axons accumulate tritiated dopamine and are selectively damaged by 6-hydroxydopamine. It is concluded that Type I axons are dopaminergic. Type II axons are serotonergic: they alone take up tritiated 5-hydroxytryptamine, and 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine selectively causes degenerative changes in these axons. Type III axons contain an unidentified neurotransmitter substance. The large opaque vesicles of these axons do not react to dichromate and are unaffected by reserpine, 6-hydroxydopamine or 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine.

    Notes: Lymphopoiesis with respect to recirculating and non-recirculating small lymphocytes was measured simultaneously in rats thymectomized as adults. Removal of the thymus at four to five weeks of age had a profound inhibitory effect upon the production of recirculating cells, whereas the formation of non-recirculating lymphocytes was only slightly depressed. Thymectomy had approximately the same impact of lymphopoiesis as thymectomy and exposure of the animal to a large dose of whole body X- and γ-irradiation. The latter finding, and the failure of a thoracic duct cell transfusion to augment lymphocyte production, accord with the view that the thymus is the principle intermediate source of recirculating small lymphocytes in the normal, unstimulated animal.

    Notes: A method is described for measuring lymphopoiesis that enables the production of recirculating and non-recirculating small lymphocytes to be estimated simultaneously. Using this technique, experiments were undertaken to determine whether the production of recirculating cells is influenced by the number present in the recirculating lymphocyte pool. The results suggest that neither a massive lymphocyte transfusion nor depletion of the pool by whole body irradiation or chronic lymph drainage affect the rate at which recirculating small lymphocytes are generated.
