Notes: [Auszug] THE Earth's atmosphere and oceans are increasingly being used as an outdoor laboratory, not only providing information about the behaviour of our environment but also insight into certain difficult, unsolved problems in fluid dynamics. These involve wave-like and turbulent fluid motions at huge ...

Notes: Summary Categorical perception was first demonstrated in studies of speech sounds (Liberman, Harris, Hoffman, & Griffith, 1957). The present work employed visual stimuli to explore categorical responding in relation to the context in which the stimuli were embedded. The target stimulus was a vertical line whose length was varied from 20 to 31 min (approximately) in steps of 1.2 min. Experiment 1 examined the effect of a geometrical context on the subjects' ability to discriminate between pairs of lines. The context improved performance, but produced no evidence of categorical responding. In Experiment 2 a graphemic context depressed performance, but failed to show clear evidence of categorization. By contrast, strong evidence of categorical responding was obtained in Experiment 3, in which the graphemes used in Experiment 2 were embedded in meaningful words. From this pattern of results it is argued that categorical responding is reflective not of relatively peripheral perceptual activity, but of higher-order decision processes.

Notes: Summary The present remarks concern the modification, by a bottom-topographical feature or other stationary perturbing effect, of a uniform zonal frictionless barotropic current in a betaplane. Simple examples illustrate the fact that there are several qualitatively distinct ways in which the zonal current can be affected by the topography.

Notes: Dynamic behaviour of a stirred liquid-liquid extraction column was studied experimentally. Various input variables of the column were varied stepwise and the resulting variations in the system and output variables were measured. In addition to experimental work, a computer model was developed on the basis of the dispersion model to simulate the dynamic behaviour of the extractor. This model forms a component program of the dynamic process simulator DIVA, developed at the TU Stuttgart. The experiments showed that the hydrodynamic parameters exhibit no significant dynamic behaviour of their own. Therefore, changes occurring in these parameters closely follow variations in input and system variables. As a result, steady-state relationships for the calculation of flow parameters could be used in the simulation program. The simulator satisfactorily reproduced the experimental results for a number of disturbances. However, this was not always the case. As shown in the following, the model did not take into account the column level controller which, under certain conditions, exerts a very strong influence on the column's dynamic behaviour. As a result, larger differences occurred between experimental and simulated data. This influence on the extractor's dynamic behaviour can, however, be eliminated by a simple modification of the level controller arrangement.
