    Notes: This paper reports on the structural and sedimentary evolution of the middle to late Eocene of the Prepyrenean External Sierras (southern Pyrenees, Spain). The initiation, duration and kinematics of a set of growth structures that developed in a shallow marine depositional setting is documented. The detailed analysis of the syntectonic marine sediments not only confirms the already known east to west progression of deformation, but also reveals the continued growth of the early formed structures as later ones propagate towards the foreland. The sedimentary units coevally deposited with these growth structures are arranged in four depositional sequences. Their boundaries correspond to flooding surfaces which grade basinwards into correlative conformities. They are also indicated by the presence of both angular unconformities and onlap geometries. Each depositional sequence generally consists of two systems tracts. The lower one, or transgressive systems tract, is formed by up to 400 m of azoic marls deposited in outer ramp areas. The upper one, or highstand systems tract, mainly consists of shallow siliciclastic and carbonate facies, up to 200 m thick, deposited in middle to inner ramp areas. These depositional sequences are interpreted to be controlled by regional tectonic pulses. An increase of tectonic activity resulted in the flooding of the basin and in the subsequent deposition of a thick succession of nearly azoic blue marls (i.e. transgressive systems tract). The overlying highstand systems tract developed following periods of diminished tectonism, with the consequent growth and progradation of shallow carbonate platform facies.

    Notes: In the El Mulato section (NE Mexico), the Upper Cretaceous marly Méndez and the Lower Palaeogene marly Velasco Formations are separated by a clastic unit. Benthic foraminifera from both marly formations indicate lower bathyal depths. The clastic unit, in contrast, contains platform sands, muddy pebbles and neritic (shallow) faunas mixed with microspherules, indicating that it was allochthonously deposited into the deep basin. The diversity and the variability in origin of the components in the clastic unit, and its sedimentological features, support a model of deposition by turbidity currents related to mass-wasting processes triggered by the Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) boundary impact. Planktic foraminifera were affected by a catastrophic extinction at the K/T boundary, whereas benthic foraminifera show reorganization of the community structure rather than significant extinction. The benthic faunal turnover may have resulted from the drop in primary productivity after the asteroid impact at the end of the Cretaceous.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Depuis l'introduction du lambeau anti-brachial radial en 1981, la morbidité liée au sacrifice nécessaire de l'artère radiale a été sévèrement souligné. Nous rapportons un cas clinique où une angiographie post-opératoire a montré une importante contribution à la vascularisation de la main de l'artère interosseuse antérieure, 2 ans après avoir levé un lambeau réverse radial pour resurfacer la main. Des investigations ont été menées pour mesurer quantitativement les flux dans les artères des avant-bras droit et gauche du patient. Contrairement à ce qui était prévu, le résultat des examens vasculaires a montré que le flux artériel global dans les artères de l'avant-bras donneur était plus important que sur le membre contro-latéral, l'artère interosseuse antérieure présentant la plus grande différence de flux. Ceci semble indiquer qu'un autre axe vasculaire majeur constitué par l'artère interosseuse antérieure se développe après une interruption de l'artère radiale lorsqu'on lève un lambeau radial, et que le flux vasculaire global à la main n'est pas altéré.
    Notes: Summary Since the introduction of the radial forearm flap in 1981, its inherent vascular morbidity in sacrificing the radial artery has been strongly criticized. In the present paper, a case report is presented where postoperative angiography showed an important contribution of the anterior interosseous artery to hand vascularity two years after raising a reverse flow distally based pedicle radial forearm flap for dorsal hand resurfacing. In order to analyze this finding, further vascular investigations using Color Duplex Imaging examinations for quantitative flow measurements comparing blood flow rates in both right and left forearm arteries were carried out in this patient. Contrary to expectations, results from vascular examinations revealed that overall blood flow in donor forearm arteries was greater than in the contralateral forearm, the anterior interosseous artery showing the greatest difference in blood flow. These data seem to indicate that another major vascular axis based on the anterior interosseous artery develops after removing the radial artery when harvesting the radial forearm flap and that global arterial inflow to the hand is not impaired.

    Notes: Abstract A static microcosm system was used to evaluate effects of the herbicide diquat (0.3–30 mg/L) on the structure and function of naturally derived microbial communities on polyurethane foam substrates. Microbial communities were exposed to a single application of diquat and were monitored for 21 days. Effects on community structure included changes in algal cell density at diquat concentrations ⩾0.3 mg/L (after an initial decrease in net productivity), bacterial cell density (1 mg/L diquat), and increased biomass accumulation (10 and 30 mg/L diquat). The species richness of protozoa was reduced at diquat concentrations 〉0.3 mg/L; protozoan species composition was progressively more dissimilar with diquat treatment. Effects on community function included inhibition of net productivity and community respiration (10 and 30 mg/L diquat), and decreased enzyme activities [alkaline phosphatase (1, 10, and 30 mg/L diquat), electron transport system (⩾0.3 mg/L diquat), and β-glucosidase (⩾0.3 mg/L diquat)]. Both photosynthetic and nonphotosynthetic organisms were affected by diquat. Most structural and functional responses were sensitive indicators of stress. Estimated chronic toxicity values ranged from 0.3 mg/L (day 3) to 5.5 mg/L (day 21). Most microbial responses indicated that microbial community structure and function did not recover within the 21-day exposure period.

    Notes: Abstract Radiological features of cystic lesions due to beta-2-microglobulin-related amyloidosis have been studied in 88 patients recieving haemodialysis for more than 4 years. Amyloid arthropathy was confirmed by demonstration of amyloid-beta-2-microglobulin deposition on different substrates. Plain radiographs of shoulder, spine, pelvis, hands and knees revealed cystic lesions in 31 patients (35.2%), the distribution being: 71% shoulder, 56.7% carpal bones, 25.8% pelvis, 16.5% femur and 13.3% knees. Discitis was found in 34 patients (38.6%). The occurence of geodes was frequent in patients suffering from amyloid arthropathy (63% vs. 23%, P = 0.0001). No significant differences were found in the frequency of discitis or erosive arthropathy in the hands of both groups. The former was related to age and the latter to secondary hyperparathyroidism. We stress the radiographic appearance and the high incidence of these lesions in patients on long-term haemodialysis.
