Notes: [Auszug] Most of the published quantitative models in biology are lost for the community because they are either not made available or they are insufficiently characterized to allow them to be reused. The lack of a standard description format, lack of stringent reviewing and authors' carelessness are the ...

Notes: [Auszug] The study of the metabolite complement of biological samples, known as metabolomics, is creating large amounts of data, and support for handling these data sets is required to facilitate meaningful analyses that will answer biological questions. We present a data model for plant metabolomics known ...

Notes: Abstract Recently, it has been argued that the phenomenon of direct transfer of intermediate metabolites between adjacent enzymes, also known as metabolic channelling, would not decrease the concentration of those intermediates in the ‘bulk’ solution. However, this conclusion has been drawn by extrapolation from the results of simulations with a rather restricted set of parameters. We show that, for a number of kinetic cases, the existence of metabolic channelling can decrease the size of the soluble pool of intermediates. When the enzyme(s) ‘downstream’ of the channel have a catalytic capacity that is large relative to the enzymes ‘upstream’ of the channel, the decrease of concentration can be substantial (3 orders of magnitude).

Notes: Abstract Patterns observable in variables and relationships from the physical sciences andengineering suggest, by analogy, a framework incorporating variables and relationshipsfrom the social sciences and management. The framework provides theoretical support forusing dynamic models in management, and may help to explain the behavior over time ofapparently unrelated variables like worker performance incentives and work in progressinventory. The framework also suggests a new analytical approach for the concept ofproductivity. An example illustrates the implementation of the concepts. This work sets thestage to building equation-based testable research hypotheses as a contribution to managementresearch.

Notes: Summary In order to describe the psychopathological characteristics of immigrant children and provide data on health service needs, we carried out a study on Portuguese children attending a child psychiatry outpatient clinic in Paris. Among 1658 children seen at the clinic during a 4-year period, all Portuguese children (N=62) were included and compared with a control group (N=186) of French subjects matched for age and sex. Results show that Portuguese children of the Paris borough under study attended the clinic more frequently than their French counterparts. The boy-to-girl ratio was found to be smaller for the Portuguese group. Poor performance in school, low proficiency in French and social disadvantages were characteristic of the Portuguese group, whereas disturbances in family relationships were a distinctive feature of the control group. For the Portuguese children, the symptoms varied according to the place of birth. In the discussion, the importance of population-based studies is stressed in order to interpret the results drawn from the clinical samples and to provide estimates of psychiatric morbidity among immigrant children. Finally, it is suggested that an attempt be made to detect these disorders early and try to prevent them from occurring.
