    Notes: Epsilon wave is an unusual electrocardiographical finding, which may appear in other pathological conditions besides the arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia, particularly in the acute myocardial infarction of the right ventricle, the inferior, or the posterior wall of the left ventricle. Its real incidence in these acute coronary syndromes remains unknown and will be probably difficult to assert, since it may be unnoticed by inexperienced physicians because of its little voltage. The outstanding interest of this case lies in the clear electrocardiographical images and in the step-by-step differential diagnosis discussed by the authors.

    Notes: Previous studies on the tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) peroxidase TPX1, including the development of transgenic tomato over-expressing this gene, supported an involvement of this peroxidase in the synthesis of lignin and suberin. The transgenic plants showed a wilty phenotype at flowering, but the relationship between this role in ligno-suberization and this phenotype was not clear. In the present study a histological approach and the measurement of water-related parameters have been performed in order to obtain an insight into the origin of this phenotype. Clear differences between transgenic and non-transgenic roots were observed in the cross-sections of the basal root zones where secondary growth was evident. The diameter of the xylem vessel was diminished in the transgenic plants. Total area corresponding to xylem in the basal cross-sections decreased 3.9 fold in the transgenic roots. In addition, the radial and outer tangential walls of the exodermis cells were more ligno-suberized in transgenic than in non-transgenic plants. After fruit set, predawn and midday water potentials were lower in transgenic than in-non-transgenic plants. At midday, the stomatal conductance was also lower in the transgenic plants, 494±69 versus 594±60 mmol m−2 s−1. Root hydraulic conductances of the transgenic and non-transgenic plants were 1.4±0.38 and 3.47±0.19 g water min−1 MPa−1, respectively. The results obtained support that the phenotype is caused by the anatomical differences found in the transgenic roots. These differences would be the cause of a increased resistance to water flow in the roots that would negatively affect the water supply to the shoot and, as a consequence, resulted in a decreased water potential in the leaves.

    Notes: SUMMARY:  The combined dyslipidaemia that accompanies the nephrotic syndrome increases the cardiovascular risk and appears to worsen long-term renal function. Our aim was to determine the efficacy and safety of 10 mg atorvastatin in the control of dyslipidaemia in these patients. We carried out a prospective, open, 6 month study of 10 patients with primary or secondary nephrotic syndrome (proteinuria 〉3.5 g/day, hypoalbuminaemia, oedema and hyperlipidaemia). The changes in lipids and plasma lipoproteins were measured, as well as the safety profile (transaminases, creatine phosphokinase, fibrinogen and antithrombin III activity) and parameters of renal function. The addition of 10 mg atorvastatin daily for 6 months resulted in a 41% reduction in low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and 31% in triglycerides (both P 〈 0.05), and a 15% increase in high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (NS). The drug was well tolerated and there was no change in the safety profile or deterioration in renal function. In fact, the levels of proteinuria fell in all but one patient (6.2 ± 2.6 vs 4.8 ± 2.5 g/24 h; P 〈 0.05). Atorvastatin, at the above dose, and for the time used proved to be a safe drug that effectively reduced dyslipidaemia in patients with nephrotic syndrome.

    Notes: The repABC replicons contain an operon encoding the initiator protein (RepC) and partitioning proteins (RepA and RepB). The latter two proteins negatively regulate the transcription of the operon. In this article we have identified two novel regulatory elements, located within the conserved repB–repC intergenic sequence, which negatively modulate the expression of repC, in plasmid p42d of Rhizobium etli. One of them is a small antisense RNA and the other is a stem–loop structure in the repABC mRNA that occludes the Shine-Dalgarno sequence of repC. According to in vivo and in vitro analyses, the small antisense RNA (57–59 nt) resembles canonical negative regulators of replication because: (i) it is transcribed from a strong constitutive promoter (P2), (ii) the transcript overlaps untranslated region upstream of the RepC coding sequences, (iii) the RNA forms one secondary structure acting as a rho-independent terminator, (iv) the antisense RNA is a strong trans-incompatibility factor and (v) its presence reduces the level of repC expression. Surprisingly, both of these seemingly negative regulators are required for efficient plasmid replication.

    Notes: The basic replicon of Rhizobium etli CE3, like other members of the repABC plasmid family, is constituted by the repABC operon. RepC is essential for replication, and RepA and RepB play a role in plasmid segregation. It has been shown that deletion derivatives lacking the repAB genes have an increased copy number, indicating that these genes participate in the control of plasmid copy number. RepA is also a trans-incompatibility factor. To understand the regulation of the repABC operon, in this paper: (i) the transcription start site of the repABC operon was determined; (ii) the promoter region was identified by site-directed mutagenesis of the putative −35 and −10 hexameric elements; and (iii) RepA was recognized as a negative regulator of the transcription of the repABC operon.

    Notes: Abstract NaCl treatment of tomato plants in hydroponic culture at concentrations as low as 50 mM resulted in enhanced accumulation of transcripts of TPX1, a full-length cDNA clone that we had isolated from a library of NaCl-treated tomato plants using a peroxidase-specific oligonucleotide probe. Although the overall amino acid sequence identity of TPX1 to other peroxidase genes was less than 45%, there was a very high degree of identity in all of the conserved domains. The deduced amino acid sequence included the presence of a N-terminal signal peptide but not the C-terminal extension present in peroxidases targeted to the vacuole. The mature protein has a theoretical pI value of 7.5. Transcripts that hybridized to TPX1 were detected only in the roots with higher levels of mRNA in epidermal and subepidermal cell layers. Isoelectric focusing of root extracts showed two major bands of peroxidase activity at pI 5.9 and 6.2. Both activities increased with salt treatment. Southern analysis indicated the presence of only a single TPX1 gene in tomato.

    Notes: Abstract HLA class I and II expression was studied on 244 (177 primary and 67 metastatic) solid human tumours of different origin. Alkaline immunophosphatase (APAAP) and immunoperoxidase were used on cryostatic sections to stain MHC antigens. Monomorphic MoAbs were used against class I heavy chain, β2-microglobulin, DR, DQ and DP molecules. Class I expression was homogeneous on colon, melanoma and epidermoidal primitive tumours. Loss of HLA class I antigens was more frequent on basal cell carcinomas and sarcomas and was related to tumour differentiation on larynx carcinoma. Class I expression was heterogeneous on breast, larynx and stomach primitive neoplasias. Class I negative tumours were more frequent on metastatic than on primitive melanomas. Divergence of class I between primary tumours and autologous metastases was observed on melanomas, larynx and colorectal carcinomas. Class II expression was heterogeneous on all tumours and in a large number of cases was associated with high intensity of leukocytic infiltrate. HLA-DR expression was higher than HLA-DP and HLA-DQ (DR〉DP〉DQ) and was related to tumour progression. Four human tumour cell lines were modulated with recombinant interferon-γ for HLA class I and II antigens. Different HLA profiles were obtained: increased class I and II expression, increased class II or a low response. Finally, class I genes from 22 tumours were compared with autologous normal cells by Southern blot analysis: 12 tumours were class I positive and 10 negative. No clear differences in RFLP were observed that could be associated with class I rearrangement. The results are discussed in relation to the role that histocompatibility antigens may play in tumour progression and invasiveness.
