    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Drehmoment- und Energiebilanzen werden für die Strömung zwischen zwei exzentrisch rotierenden Kreisscheiben (ERD) untersucht. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit verdient dabei die Rolle der Spannungen, die die Ränder der Platten auf die freie Oberfläche ausüben. Es wird gezeigt, daß die Anwesenheit dieser Spannungen wesentlich für die Beurteilung des sogenannten Spannungsenergie-Paradoxes ist. Auch wird der Zusammenhang zwischen diesen Spannungen und den Abweichungen der wirklichen Geschwindigkeitsverteilung von den bisher angenommenen Verteilungen diskutiert.
    Notes: Summary The balances of torque and energy in the flow between eccentric rotating discs (ERD) have been investigated. Special attention has been given to the role of stresses resulting from the forces that are delivered to the free surface by the edges of the plates. These stresses are shown to be significant in considering the so-called stress power paradox. Their role with respect to deviations of the velocity profile from the usually assumed one is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Attractive forces acting between particles in dispersions may cause a three-dimensional structure to be built up. A temporary-network model is postulated that describes the rheological behaviour of such systems. Chains of particles are assumed to be created and broken by thermal actions and by applied deformation. The relation between the network structure and the macroscopic stress tensor is deduced. One of the main model features is that no use is made of the common assumption of affinity of the motion of the chain vectors with the gradient of the macroscopic velocity field. Instead, the chain deformations are assumed to depend on the forces acting on them, i.e. their deformations depend on their stiffness and on the applied deformation, whereas fracture of chains may cause stress relaxation in the rest of the network. The chains may behave as highly non-linear springs, whereas the probability that the chains will break in some time interval may be an explicit function of the chain length itself. Integral equations are derived, from which the stress-tensor components can be calculated in any flow experiment, that obeys creeping-flow conditions. Analytical expressions are obtained for the relaxation spectrum of such systems in terms of the microscopic parameters.

    Notes: Abstract In solutions of ABA-triblock copolymers in a poor solvent for A thermoreversible gelation can occur. A three-dimensional dynamic network may form and, given the polymer and the solvent, its structure will depend on temperature and polymer mass fraction. The zero-shear rate viscosity of solutions of the triblock-copolymer polystyrene-polyisoprene-polystyrene in n-tetradecane was measured as a function of temperature and polymer mass fraction, and analyzed; the polystyrene blocks contained about 100 monomers, the polyisoprene blocks about 2000 monomers. Empirically, in the viscosity at constant mass fraction plotted versus inverse temperature, two contributions could be discerned; one contribution dominating at high and the other one dominating at low temperatures. In a comparison with theory, the contribution dominating at low temperatures was identified with the Lodge transient network viscosity; some questions remain to be answered, however. An earlier proposal for defining the gelation temperature T gel is specified for the systems considered, and leads to a gelation curve; T gel as a function of polymer mass fraction.

    Notes: The gelation of poly(methacrylic acid) in water was studied as a function of degree of neutralization with NaOH. It was found that charging the molecular displaces the onset of gelation to higher concentrations but makes the transition occur over an even narrower concentration range. This extreme sensitivity of rheological properties to charge may play a role in biocolloidal systems. The phenomenon of reversible gelation is discussed in general and related to the properties of the particular system. The method of measurement, which involves the determination of the dynamic response in the 1 Hz region and the measurement of phase angle, is described in detail. A method of deriving the relaxation time spectrum from measurements of phase angle is given.

    Notes: The assumed analogy between polymer solutions and polymer-network gels as regards the thermodynamics of swelling - a fundamental assumption implicit in all previous analyses of swelling measurements on gels, aimed at checking the statistical theories of rubber elasticity - is shown in fact to be rather limited. In particular, excluded volume effects, which play a dominant role in both solutions and gels, are quite different in the two types of systems. A new thermodynamic description of swelling equilibria, taking account of differences in excluded volume effects, is given, and analogies and differences between gels and solutions are pointed out.

    Notes: The intrinsic viscosity [η] and the translational friction coefficient f of polymer molecules in solution are calculated on the basis of the porous sphere model. The only information needed to predict [η] and f is the polymer molecular weight, the radius of gyration in the solvent, and the permeability as a function of position in the “porous sphere.” For systems for which this information is available there is satisfactory agreement between predicated and directly measured values of [η] and f. No adjustment of parameters is required. The influence of solvent quality is more complex than is suggested by the experimentally verified Flory-Fox relation for [η]; the simple form of this relation stems from the fact that two quite large effects of solvent quality approximately compensate each other. The complete flow pattern of the solvent around and through the polymer coil can be calculated. Contrary to what is usually believed the solvent flow in the polymer coil is not “effectively blocked”, even at the center. The connection between the present treatment and the microscopic theory of Kirkwood and Riseman is investigated.
