Notes: Spatial search is a highly complex decision problem, hi this paper, modeling approaches are developed which alleviate some of the difficulties encountered in analyzing spatial search. A search modeling framework is outlined which states the problem in a sufficiently detailed yet manageable format. Within the framework, an operational model is developed which generates the probability that a feasible search pattern will result in the lowest realized acquisition cost. Solution strategies for the model include Monte Carlo simulation and a pruning rule which can reduce the dimensionality of the problem. Computational experience with the Monte Carlo procedure and the pruning rule is also provided.

Notes: In this paper, the single facility minimax hub location problem is considered. The problem involves siting a hub facility in order to minimize the most costly interaction between a set of fixed nodes. Several solution techniques are reviewed, including: discrete locational evaluation; Helly's Theorem; a graphical approach; linear programming feasibility; and Drezner's round trip location algorithm. A comparison of these approaches favors the Drezner algorithm. The minimax hub location problem and the Drezner solution strategy are illustrated through application to air passenger flows between U.S. Cities.

Notes: . Price dispersion (variation) and agglomeration are common characteristics of spatial markets, in particular, markets with imperfect consumer information and search. However, pricing and location strategies in these markets are not well analyzed since spatial search is difficult to model without restricting the spatial dimension of the problem. This paper analyzes pricing and location strategies in a market with spatid search using a probabilistic modeling strategy that does not restrict search patterns in the plane. Specifically, the analysis considers the pricing strategy of an isolated firm in response to the agglomeration of competing firms. Results indicate that spatial and temporal price dispersion are effective responses to competitors'agglomeration. However, the relative effectiveness of these strategies varies with market conditions. In addition, agglomeration can have some counterintuitive effects. This paper also provides insights into existing theories of spatial search and spatial competition in spatially-restricted (linear and circular) markets.

Notes: For all its swashbuckling image, classical mercenary soldiering was, on the whole, as subject to the discipline of practical economics as less glamorous-sounding pursuits. Current economic and political considerations dictated whether and why a citizen would become a mercenary; what and how he would be paid; what negotiating power he possessed; whether a ruler would use mercenaries or his own citizenry to fight his wars, and the necessity for a recruiting centre or ‘mercenary market’ where prospective employers and employees could meet and strike a bargain.

Notes: Conceived by Nero and born in the heat of the civil wars of A. D. 68–9, I Adjutrix was an extraordinary legion. Composed of former seamen, non-citizens from Pannonia, Egypt, Syria, and Greece, it possessed a character all its own, an ambition which at the outset prompted it to mob Galba while demanding legion status, and an enthusiasm which in its first formal battle caused it seriously to disconcert the veteran apax legion by its dash and bravery.

Notes: Abstract. Spatial analysis mostly developed in an era when data was scarce and computational power was expensive. Consequently, traditional spatial analysis greatly simplifies its representations of geography. The rise of geographic information science (GISci) and the changing nature of scientific questions at the end of the 20th century suggest a comprehensive re-examination of geographic representation in spatial analysis. This paper reviews the potential for improved representations of geography in spatial analysis. Existing tools in spatial analysis and new tools available from GISci have tremendous potential for bringing more sophisticated representations of geography to the forefront of spatial analysis theory and application.

Notes: Abstract Existing analyses of the interactions between spatial search and spatial competition are limited since it has been difficult to incorporate the complex routing component of the behavior. This paper examines the interactions between spatial search behavior and spatial competition using a probabilistic modeling strategy that doesnot restrict routing. Experimental analyses examine basic hypotheses from optimal search theory and competitive location theory in the context of spatial search. While experimental results support several of these basic hypotheses, the experiments also generate some contradictions and additional insights.

Notes: [Auszug] We have cloned the gene coding for a ubiquitin-protein hydrolase from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The gene (YUH1) was isolated from a yeast genomic library by screening with an oligonucleotide probe designed from the amino acid sequence of the purified hydrolase. The YUH1 gene encodes a 26 ...
