Notes: [Auszug] Wetting of a surface by a liquid is formally defined by the well known Young equation (equation (1)) Ysv -YSL =YLV cos 0 (D where LV is the surface tension at liquid-vapour interface; SL, the surface tension at solid-liquid interface; YSV, the surface tension at solid-vapour interface; and q is ...

Notes: Abstract Isozyme variation was studied to determine genetic relationships among 269 cultivars of Dioscorea alata originating from the South Pacific, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. Four polymorphic enzyme systems (MDH, PGI, SkDH, 6PGD) revealed 66 isozyme phenotypes, or zymotypes, each uniquely characterized by the presence or absence of 27 electromorphs. Identical zymotypes were found to be distributed in different geographical areas and vice versa, different zymotypes exist within the same geographic zone. Subsequently, distinct local cultivars from the New Caledonia germplasm collection were rated and 131 morphotypes were identified by 25 morpho-agronomic descriptors. Four major groups of morphotypes were identified and compared with the zymotypes of the described accessions. Each of the 131 cultivars was also analysed for the physico-chemical characteristics of the tubers (percent dry matter, percent starch, total minerals, proteins content, polyphenolic compounds, P, K and Ca contents) and three major chemotypic groups were identified. No correlations were found between morphotypes, zymotypes and chemotypes of accessions grown in a common garden. Many cultivars exhibited variation in qualitative traits, such as anthocyan pigmentation, probably as a result of human selection of somatic mutations. The most widespread D. alata cultivars exhibit a narrow genetic base. However, the existing genetic variation is also due to ancient sexual recombinations as demonstrated by the isozyme patterns. Dioscorea alata might be a true species and not a putative cultigen as previously reported.

Notes: Abstract To establish the pathogenic role of duodenogastric reflux in dyspeptic symptoms we have compared the clinical features, gastrointestinal motility, and rates of duodenogastric bile reflux in 12 cholecistectomized dyspeptic patients, 12 dyspeptic patients with intact gallbladder, and 12 healthy controls. Specific symptoms were scored for severity and frequency. Gastrointestinal manometry was performed during 3 hr of fasting and 2 hr postprandially. Simultaneously, samples of duodenal and gastric contents were obtained sequentially for quantification of bile acids. Results show that symptom global severity (9.6±0.4 vs 8.8±0.7) and frequency (9.9±0.8 vs 9.0±0.5) were similar in both dyspeptic groups; only abdominal pain was milder in cholecystectomized patients (1.9±0.1 vs 2.6±0.2;P〈0.05). Fasting gastric bile acid concentrations were higher in cholecystectomized patients (P〈0.05) and antral postcibal motility lower (P〈0.05) than in the other groups. No relation among gastric hypomotility, duodenogastric bile reflux, and symptom scores was detected. We concluded that patients with functional dyspepsia and a prior cholecystectomy have clinical features similar to those with gallbladders, but some physiological features are dissimilar: antral motility is decreased and duodenogastric bile reflux is increased. Thus, a uniform clinical expression of various pathophysiological disturbances constitutes the basis of functional dyspepsia.

Notes: Conclusions A pen-counter system has been described which was found to be very useful for counting the number of muscle cells in the cross-section of narrow slips of the intercostal muscles. This system speeded up very drastically the whole counting procedure and made possible an extensive survey of the fibre densities in the intercostal muscles of dogs. It should also prove to be a convenient instrumental approach in all areas in which large numbers of small objects have to be counted.

Notes: Abstract A drift-free electronic integrator for phasic signals in the 0·08 to 20 Hz frequency range has been designed for respiratory studies in man, cat and rat. The integrator operates continuously without the need for any adjustments and uses a baseline correction technique which is controlled by the input signal and which allows a fast recovery from input signal transients.

Notes: Abstract A 32 channel data acquisition system for the survey of intercostal muscle activity in the cat has been developed. Electromyographic signals, picked up by electrodes implanted in the intercostal muscles, are conditioned to be digitised and recorded on a magnetic tape through an on-line digital computer. In this signal conditioning, significant importance is given to motor unit selection and weighing, according to their size and distance from the electrode pick up point. A low pass-filter, with a response time course similar to the one observed in the twitch of the intercostal muscles of the cat, is also used. Since data obtained in the process is time locked, synchronised multichannel time domain analysis can be achieved.
