    Notes: Photoresponse signals with widths as short as 1.5 ps are observed from epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films using electro-optic sampling techniques. Voltage transients less than 2 ps wide are seen in 100- and 200-nm films exposed to 150-fs laser pulses and cooled to 79 K. At low bias currents, the amplitude of the fast response varies linearly with the bias current, suggesting a kinetic inductive mechanism. A negative transient about 15-ps long is also seen that may provide evidence for nonequilibrium recombination of excited quasiparticles into Cooper pairs. At high bias currents or large laser fluences, a fast tail with a decay time of about 10 ps appears in the response followed by a slow, resistive bolometric component due to sample heating. Nonequilibrium aspects of the photoresponse and the origin of the fast tail are discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Background Inverse associations between allergic disease and sibship have been consistently described and are frequently explained by purported lower rates of early infection among children from small families. Alternative explanations include the possibility that pregnancy itself determines maternal atopic status.Objective To test the hypothesis that atopy defined by skin prick test (SPT) declines with increasing numbers of pregnancies.Methods At enrolment to a birth cohort, mothers were skin prick tested to three common allergens. Seven years later these women underwent a second SPT and provided information on their reproductive histories. At both visits, information on allergic disease was also sought.Results Twenty five (15%) women who were initially atopic were no longer so at the second visit; loss of hayfever symptoms was reported by 33 (29%) women. Women with higher numbers of intervening pregnancies were more likely to ‘lose’ their atopy (P=0.05) and symptoms of hayfever (P=0.02); this was not true for asthma. The findings could not be accounted for by maternal age.Conclusion Successive pregnancies may in part determine a mother's atopic state. Since maternal atopy is a risk factor for childhood atopic disease, this process may affect the atopic state of successive children. These findings suggest an alternative explanation for the sibship effect in allergic disease.

    Notes: Background Although atopic eczema (AE) is a common disease, little is known about its causes. Objectives To investigate the role of dietary and environmental factors associated with the development of AE by the age of 2 years. Methods A cohort of children was recruited before birth from a consecutive series of newly pregnant mothers presenting for antenatal care at three general practices in Ashford, Kent, U.K. Data up to the age of 2 years were available for 624 (97%) of the original cohort. AE was defined using components of the U.K. diagnostic criteria for AE, maternal report of doctor-diagnosed eczema and maternally reported eczema. Exposures of interest were family history of allergic disease, dietary and breastfeeding patterns, family size and exposure to indoor domestic allergens. Results The cumulative prevalence of AE using the U.K. diagnostic criteria was 14% (95% confidence interval, CI 11–17%). The prevalence of maternally reported doctor-diagnosed eczema was much higher (31%, 95% CI 27–35%) and almost half (45%) the mothers reported that their child had ever had eczema (95% CI 41–49%). The relationship between parental atopy, parental history of allergic disease and the child's eczema was consistently stronger for the mothers than the fathers. There was a marked increase in the prevalence of eczema with increasing maternal education and in less crowded homes, associations that remained significant after controlling for other factors. Conclusions The associations with environmental factors are consistent with the hypothesis that more crowded houses, increased family size and birth order, which may possibly increase early exposure to infections, may offer protection from subsequent development of eczema.

    Notes: Abstract In this study, a high surface area 4Co∶6Mo∶100γ-Al2O3 sulphide prepared using precipitation from homogeneous solution (PFHS) has been used for the catalytic splitting of hydrogen sulphide into H2 and elemental sulphur. The activity of this new formulation was significantly better than previously reported recipes. Kinetic data collected over a wide range of H2S partial pressures between 883 and 983 K revealed that, although the decomposition followed a first-order law, a mechanism involving H2S adsorption on co-ordinative unsaturation sites of the Co-Mo sulphide catalyst gave a Langmuir-Hinshelwood rate expression that yielded satisfactory model parameters. In particular, the scission of the surface H-S bond appeared to be the rate determining step.

    Notes: Abstract: Measurement of the penetration depth as a function of temperature using millimeter wave transmission in the range 130-500GHz are reported for three (YBCO) laser ablated thin films. Two films, deposited on a substrate ( ), exhibit a narrow resistive transition ( ). One has been subsequently irradiated with ions in order to increase the scattering rate of the quasi-particles ( ). The third film, grown on MgO ( ), exhibits also a fairly narrow transition ( ) and a high crystalline quality. The experiment provides the absolute value for the penetration depth at low temperature: the derivation from the transmission data and the experimental uncertainty are discussed. We find a zero temperature penetration depth Å, Å and Å, for YBCO-500 Å/ (pristine), YBCO-1300 Å/MgO and YBCO-500 Å/ (irradiated) respectively. exhibits a different behavior for the three films. In the pristine sample, shows a clear temperature and frequency dependence, namely the temperature dependence is consistent with a linear variation, whose slope decreases with frequency: this is considered as an evidence for the scattering rate being of the order of the measuring frequency. A two fluids analysis yields .In the two other samples, does not display any frequency dependence, suggesting a significantly larger scattering rate. The temperature dependence is different in these latter samples. It is consistent with a linear variation for the YBCO/MgO sample, not for the YBCO/ irradiated one, which exhibits a T2 dependence up to . We have compared our data to the predictions of the d-wave model incorporating resonant scattering and we do not find a satisfactory agreement. However, the large value of in the pristine sample is a puzzle and sheds some doubt on a straightforward comparison with the theory of data from thin films, if considered as dirty d-wave superconductors.
