    Notes: One hundred and twelve renal transplant recipients and 40 patients with chronic renal failure undergoing maintenance haemodialysis were included in this study. Skin infections were the most common complication in renal transplant recipients (67.8%), with fungal infections being the most frequent (58%). Kaposi's sarcoma was found in three of our transplant patients (2.6%); no other skin tumors were observed in our cases. The second most frequent skin complication after infections was acne lesions (43.7%). On the other hand, pallor and dryness were the most common skin signs observed in uraemic patients; fungal infections were found in 15%. No skin neoplasms were found in the uraemic patients. In conclusion, skin infections and Kaposi's sarcoma are more common in renal transplant recipients than in uraemic patients under haemodialysis maintenance treatment.

    Notes: Summary A new class of polyconjugated polymers namely poly(2,5-arylidenecyclopentanone) and poly(2,6-arylidenecyclohexanone) has been obtained by condensation of cyclopentanone or cyclohexanone with terephthaldehyde. Copolymerization of the corresponding monomers were also carried out. The model compounds were prepared from cyclopentanone or cyclohexanone with benzaldehyde and their structures were elucidated by IR, NMR, and elemental analyses. The polymers were charactrized by elemental analysis, IR, UV, viscometry, DSC measurements, thermogravimetric and X-ray analyses. Electrical conductivities in the insulating range 10-10–10-12 (ohm cm)-1 were observed for the polymers 1,2, while the copolymers 3 gave 10-9 (ohm cm)-1. Doping with iodine increases the semiconducting values of the polymers 10-7–10-8 (ohm cm)-1, whereas the increase in case of copolymer was more distinct 10-6 (ohm cm)-1.

    Notes: Abstract A reliable and rapid procedure for the flotation and micro-determination of Au(III) using N-cyanoacylacetaldehyde hydrazone (CyAH) is proposed. CyAH forms a blue 1:1 complex (Kf=4.1×105 mol−1l−1) with Au(III) at pH 3–7. The maximum absorbance is obtained after 7 min; instantaneously by adding 3.3×10−3 mol/l H3PO4 or by heating to 55°C. Beer's law is obeyed for 1–30 ppm of Au(III) with a molar absorptivity of 0.3×104 l mol−1 cm−1 at 550 nm.

    Notes: Coronary artery disease (CAD) remains the leading cause of death in the Western world. The high impact of its main sequelae, acute myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure (CHF), on the quality of life of patients and the cost of health care drives the search for new therapies. The recent finding that stem cells contribute to neovascularization and possibly improve cardiac function after myocardial infarction makes stem cell therapy the most highly active research area in cardiology. Although the concept of stem cell therapy may revolutionize heart failure treatment, several obstacles need to be addressed. To name a few: 1) Which patient population should be considered for stem cell therapy? 2) What type of stem cell should be used? 3) What is the best route for cell delivery? 4) What is the optimum number of cells that should be used to achieve functional effects? 5) Is stem cell therapy safer and more effective than conventional therapies? The published studies vary significantly in design, making it difficult to draw conclusions on the efficacy of this treatment. For example, different models of ischemia, species of donors and recipients, techniques of cell delivery, cell types, cell numbers and timing of the experiments have been used. However, these studies highlight the landmark concept that stem cell therapy may play a major role in treating cardiovascular diseases in the near future. It should be noted that stem cell therapy is not limited to the treatment of ischemic cardiac disease. Non-ischemic cardiomyopathy, peripheral vascular disease, and aging may be treated by stem cells. Stem cells could be used as vehicle for gene therapy and eliminate the use of viral vectors. Finally, stem cell therapy may be combined with pharmacological, surgical, and interventional therapy to improve outcome. Here we attempt a systematic overview of the science of stem cells and their effects when transplanted into ischemic myocardium.

    Notes: Somatic gene therapy of vascular diseases is a promising new field in modern medicine. Recent advancements in gene transfer technology have greatly evolved our understanding of the pathophysiologic role of candidate disease genes. With this knowledge, the expression of selective gene products provides the means to test the therapeutic use of gene therapy in a multitude of medical conditions. In addition, with the completion of genome sequencing programs, gene transfer can be used also to study the biologic function of novel genes in vivo.Novel genes are delivered to targeted tissue via several different vehicles. These vectors include adenoviruses, retroviruses, plasmids, plasmid/liposomes, and oligonucleotides. However, each one of these vectors has inherent limitations. Further investigations into developing delivery systems that not only allow for efficient, targeted gene transfer, but also are stable and nonimmunogenic, will optimize the clinical application of gene therapy in vascular diseases. This review further discusses the available mode of gene delivery and examines six major areas in vascular gene therapy, namely prevention of restenosis, thrombosis, hypertension, atherosclerosis, peripheral vascular disease in congestive heart failure, and ischemia. Although we highlight some of the recent advances in the use of gene therapy in treating vascular disease discovered primarily during the past two years, many excellent studies published during that period are not included in this review due to space limitations.The following is a selective review of practical uses of gene transfer therapy in vascular diseases. This review primarily covers work performed in the last 2 years. For earlier work, the reader may refer to several excellent review articles. For instance, Belalcazer et al. (6) reviewed general aspects of somatic gene therapy and the different vehicles used for the delivery of therapeutic genes. Gene therapy in restenosis and stimulation of angiogenesis in the cardiac muscle are discussed in reviews by several investigators (13,26,57, 74,83). In another review, Meyerson et al. (43) discuss advances in gene therapy for vascular proliferative disorders and chronic peripheral and cardiac ischemia.
