    Notes: Experimental observations of the energy-dependent electron-beam penetration in type II-A natural diamond are reported. The experimental data are compared with results obtained from numerical Monte Carlo simulations, and the results are in very good agreement. The results also reveal that a threshold energy of about 125 keV is necessary for complete penetration for a 35 μm sample. It is found that over the 30–180 keV range, the energy dependence of the penetration depth and total path length exhibits a power-law relation. Monte Carlo simulations have also been performed to investigate the excess carrier-generation profiles within diamond for a set of incident e-beam energy distributions. The simulation results demonstrate the feasibility of tailoring the internal source function, and hence influencing the diffusion currents, the internal electric fields, and charge injection through the contacts.

    Notes: We propose an application for the NTC (negative temperature coefficient) thermistor miniature bead as a sensor to measure the volume flowing through a microporous membrane over a 0–15 cm3/min range. Only one thermistor is used and small temperature changes that can occur during the experiment can be ignored. No compensation or linearity circuitry is used [C. Yang, M. Kümmel, and H. Soeberg, Sensors and Actuators 15, 51 (1988)]. Assembly is easy and it can be adapted to automatic control, for example, to control the flow of a peristaltic pump by connection to an A/D D/A board and computer. When the experimental data was fitted to a potential type curve (y=axb), a sensitivity between 5% and 8% and a correlation coefficient of 0.99 were obtained. The response of the sensor when the flow changes is immediate, although the time taken for the measurement to stabilize is dependent on the size of the variation (between 4 and 7 s). The fitting curve is used to determine the volume flow that is caused by a pressure gradient applied to the membrane placed between two bulks with the same fluid.

    Notes: This article presents two solutions to the problem of determining small flows of liquids in experiments with solid microporous membranes. This measurement is carried out either by means of an integrator system or a derivator system which, combined with the respective control circuits, automatically control the performance of a flow measuring cell. These devices permit the determination of small flows (1–10 cm3/min with 0.1 cm3/min of sensitivity). They can also be applied to small pulsating flows such as those generated by a peristaltic pump. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In many scientific and industrial applications the permeating flow through a membrane separating two fluid phases must be kept constant, either because the flow is feeding another system which requires a constant in-flow, or because membrane fouling is being studied and it is necessary to know what must be done to maintain the flow. We describe a digital proportional-integral controller which makes it possible to maintain a constant permeating flow through a Nuclepore membrane with 8 μm mean pore radius. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract— Chronic administration of ethanol results in the development of tolerance and dependence. The molecular mechanism underlying these behavioral actions of ethanol is poorly understood. Several lines of evidence have suggested that some of the pharmacological actions of ethanol are mediated via a potentiation of GABAergic transmission. Chronic ethanol administration results in a reduction in the GABAA receptor-mediated 36Cl− uptake in cortical synaptoneurosomes and primary cultured neurons. We and others have shown that it also results in a 40-50% reduction in GABAA receptor α-subunit mRNA levels in the rat cerebral cortex. In the present study, we investigated the expression of α1, α2, and α3 subunits of the GABAA receptor in the cerebral cortex and the α1 subunit in the cerebellum by immunoblotting using polyclonal antibodies raised against α1-, α2-, and α3-subunit polypeptides following chronic ethanol treatment. These results reveal that chronic ethanol administration to rats results in a 61 ± 4% reduction in level of the GABAA receptor α1subunit (51 kDa), 47 ± 8% reduction in level of the α2subunit (53 kDa), and 30 ± 7% reduction in level of the α3subunit (59 kDa) in the cerebral cortex and a 56 ± 5% reduction in content of the α1 subunit in the cerebellum. In summary, this ethanol-induced reduction in content of the GABAA receptor α subunits may underlie alterations in the GABAA receptor function and could be related to cellular adaptation to the functional disturbance caused by ethanol.

    Notes: We present a variation of the stalagmometer method for automatically determining the surface tension of a liquid–gas interface using a pressure sensor to measure the pressure variation per drop. The presented method does not depend on a knowledge of the density of the problem liquid and obtains values with a measurement error in the range of 1%–2%. Its low cost and simplicity mean that the technique can be used in the teaching and instrumentation laboratory in the same way as other methods. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Six patients in a family with a history of hereditary angioedema reported swelling of the extremities and recurrent abdominal pain occurring spontaneously or after trauma. Attacks of oedema involving the airways, the greatest danger with this disorder, were present only in one case.This autosomal dominant disease is due to deficient activity of the inhibitor of the first component of complement. Low levels of C4, and absence of C1 esterase inhibitor confirm the diagnosis. Two asymptomatic cases with the appropriate biochemical abnormality are reported in this study. For short term prophylaxis of attacks (before surgery especially), fresh frozen plasma is used, or better still, C1 esterase inhibitor. For long term prophylaxis of attacks antifibrinolytic and hormonal drugs are used: in two cases, the authors obtained good results with methyltestosterone after failure of tranexamic acid.
