Notes: Summary The ability of concentrated nitric acid (65% HNO3) to initiate reactions of polymerization when in contact with acrylic and methacrylic acids and esters at room temperature in the absence of other reagents has been studied in this laboratory. In a previous paper, we presented the results when the reaction was applied to methacrylic monomers. This work reports data obtained with methyl and ethyl acrylates; high molecular weight ester-acid copolymers were produced. The nature of the products and the course of the reaction are discussed.

Notes: Abstract PVC/aliphatic ketone systems were investigated by NMR relaxation times such as proton and carbon-13 spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) and proton spin-lattice relaxation time in the rotating frame (T1ϱ). The proton T1 results showed that these systems are homogeneous, while proton T1ϱ indicates the existence of more than one domain.

Notes: Abstract Viscometric data were applied to characterize the miscibility of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC)/poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) mixtures using six samples of EVAs with different vinyl acetate content in the copolymer. Relative viscosity vs composition plots showed the imiscibility of PVC/EVA 31 and PVC/EVA 41 blends. The variation of the reduced viscosity, ηsp/C with the concentration, C, has been studied for 50:50 by weight blends of PVC/EVA 45, PVC/EVA 45A, PVC/EVA 50 and PVC/EVA 70 in tetrahydrofuran at 25°C. The presence of a sharp crossover and a consequent reduction of slope in ηsp/C vs C plots showed that these systems are miscible for a concentration range which corresponds to the regime of dilute solution.

Notes: We are investigating an unusual reaction that occurs when methyl methacrylate (MMA) is kept in contact with concentrated nitric acid1 (65% HNO3, sp. gr. 1.41). Polymer of high molecular weight is formed, showing about one unit of methacrylic acid (MAA) per unit of MMA, when equilibrium is reached. The reaction depends on the temperature, the molar ratio MMA:HNO3, and the reaction time. Although we also found polymer at temperatures in the range 50-70°C,2 in this paper we only report the results when the temperature was kept between 25 and 40°C. Methacrylic acid (MAA) was found to homopolymerize under those mild conditions; its behavior was investigated. Although we also observed that polymer is formed with sulfuric acid (96%) and that acrylic acid polymerizes with both nitric and sulfuric acid at 20-30°C, we are limiting this article to the observed polymerizing action of nitric acid on methyl methacrylate and on methacrylic acid. Work proceeds on this matter in this laboratory.

Notes: In a previous article we presented preliminary information on IR spectrometric evidence for the interaction between poly(vinyl chloride) and ketones by using films with residual solvent as samples for spectrometry. This article reports detailed information on PVC-MEK film systems as compared to model compounds. The results indicate that there are “specific” interactions which were observed by a frequency shift of the carbonyl absorption of the ketone and changes on intensities of the C—Cl vibrational modes of the polymer, which are similar to the effects observed for nonpolymeric systems.
