    Notes: . Associative memory techniques are drawn from the artificial intelligence literature, and have demonstrated considerable utility for parameter identification in dynamical systems. Previous turning point forecasts constructed by LeSage are compared to forecasts generated by associative memories and simple autoregressive models. Both the associative memories and the autoregressions perform as well or better than the more complicated econometric procedures described by LeSage, with the exception of West and Harrison's (1989) dynamic linear model specification. Extensions are suggested.

    Notes: Abstract Equations of fish yield in lakes as a function of mean annual air temperature have been published for lake whitefish, northern pike, and walleye. Using the contouring and modelling features of a geographic information system (Tydac Technologies' SPANS), we prepared maps of (i) species distribution, (ii) mean annual air temperature, and (iii) temperature increases predicted by the Goddard Institute for Space Studies' global climate model (GISS-GCM). We combined these maps with the yield equations for the three study species to form a regional model predicting the spatial distribution of yield capability in eastern Canada with and without climate change. The GISS-GCM predicts temperature increases of 2.5 to 7.7 °C (mean = 4.5 °C) in eastern Canada, midway between the values predicted by two other GCMs considered. The regional model predicts a substantial spatial re-distribution of fishery capabilities. Areas now supporting high yields become marginal and areas at the margin of, or outside, the current species range become ‘optimal’. Without efforts to prevent temperature increases or large artificial efforts to redistribute preferred fish species, Canadian freshwater fisheries will suffer major disruptions given the temperature increases predicted by the GISS-GCM.

    Notes: Abstract Fifty-seven male chronic pain patients admitted to an inpatient multimodal pain treatment program at a Midwestern Veterans Administration hospital completed the MMPI, Profile of Mood States (POMS), Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (TSCS), Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (RAS), activity diaries, and an extensive pain questionnaire. All patients were assessed both before and after treatment, and most also were assessed 2–5 months prior to treatment. No significant changes occurred during the baseline period, but significant improvements were evident at posttreatment on most variables: MMPI, POMS, TSCS, RAS, pain severity, sexual functioning, and activity diaries. MMPI subgroup membership, based on a hierarchical cluster analysis in a larger sample, was not predictive of differential treatment outcome. Possible reasons for comparable treatment gains among these subgroups, which previously have been shown to differ on many psychological and behavioral factors, are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Two-hundred-forty male pain patients were given the MMPI and an extensive pain history questionnaire. A hierarchical clustering procedure was used, and three distinct profiles emerged. One profile was essentially “normal,” while a second profile revealed the “hypochondriasis” configuration, and a third was highly elevated on scales which reflect a “psychopathological” type of profile. A discriminant analysis yielded functions correctly classifying over 90% of the subjects in each group. Although the three groups did not significantly differ on age, education, income, IQ, assertiveness, type of pain, or years of pain duration, they did differ on the pain history questions relating to pain severity and pain impact on their lives. The psychopathological group reported significantly more distress than the hypochondriasis group, and the hypochondriasis group reported significantly more distress than the normal group. The implications for pain treatment are discussed.

    Notes: Conclusion The numerical solution of Womersley flow can provide important physical insights to the student of Biofluid dynamics. This computer program is less than 70 lines and can be entered rapidly without extensive knowledge of Mathematica. Through manipulations, the effect of changes in the unsteadiness parameter, Reynolds number, and waveform shape on the pulsatile hemodynamics in straight tubes, can be explored. The exercise reinforces the importance of unsteady forces on the complex processes of physiologic flow and illustrates the usefulness of computers in fluid mechanics analyses.

    Notes: Abstract Local flow alterations created by a metallic stent in a simulated coronary artery were studied to compare the hemodynamic effects of two different stent geometries. Dye injection flow visualization and computational fluid dynamics were used. Resting and exercise conditions were studied. Flow visualization using the dye injection method provided a qualitative picture of stent hemodynamics while the computational approach provided detailed quantitative information on the flow next to the vessel wall near the intersections of stent wires. Dye injection visualization revealed that more dye became entrapped between the wires where the wire spacing was smallest. The dye washout times were shorter under exercise conditions for both wire spacings tested. The computational results showed that stagnation zones were continuous from one wire to the next when the wire spacing was small. Results from greater wire spacing (more than six wire diameters) showed that the stagnation zones were separate for at least part of the cardiac cycle. The sizes of the stagnation zones were larger under exercise conditions, and the largest stagnation zones were observed distal to the stent. These studies demonstrate that stent geometry has a significant effect on local hemodynamics. The observation that fluid stagnation is continuous in stents with wire spacings of less than six wire diameters may provide a criterion for future stent design. © 2000 Biomedical Engineering Society.     Notes: Abstract In some angiographic methods for measurement of mean coronary flow in ml/min, a threshold is applied to ‘concentration-distance’ curves obtained from a constant rate injection by computing the intravascular contrast medium concentration along the main coronary branches. If the shape of the velocity profile would remain parabolic throughout the cardiac cycle, the correct threshold value would be ‘50% of the concentration at the injection site’. But, coronary flow being strongly pulsatile, the shape of the velocity profile must be expected to vary appreciably within the cardiac phase. In order to investigate if a single, appropriate threshold value nevertheless exists for a great variety of coronary flow pulses and velocity profiles, the spreading of contrast medium injected continuously in a tube perfused by a time varying flow Q(t) was studied by computer simulation. While the particular time courses of flow and velocity profile appear to be of secondary importance, the ratio ‘injection rate to peak coronary flow’ has a major impact. If it is equal to or greater than 1, a threshold value of 47% is the best choice. If the ratio is markedly less than 1, no appropriate threshold exists and use of the 47% threshold will result in considerable flow underestimations. This was fully confirmed by measurements of absolute coronary flow performed in patients.

    Notes: When poly(methyl methacrylate) films containing UV absorbers are exposed to UV light, the absorbers undergo photodegradation resulting in loss of absorbance. If the data extend for less than one half-life, both zero and first order kinetic treatment give fairly linear fits, but the rate constants so derived are dependent on the initial absorbance of the films. When the zero order rate constants are corrected to account for the higher rate of degradation near the surface compared with the bulk that occurs in highly absorbing films, consistent “infinite absorption” zero order rate constants are derived. The inhomogeneous degradation is due to only the highly absorbed, higher energy light contributing significantly to the degradation. For the benzophenone and benzotriazole classes of absorber, at least 65% of the degradation is due to light with wavelengths 〈 350 nm. Structural variations generally caused only small differences in the rates of degradation of these classes of absorbers unless the substitutions disrupted the intramolecular hydrogen bonds that are critical for stability. If the hydrogen bond is weakened, the absorber is less stable.
