    Notes: Genetic sex is established at fertilization, but the external genitalia do not acquire distinct sexual characteristics until the twelfth week, The reproductive organs in both sexes develop from primordia which appear identical during early stages. Gonadal sex is controlled by the Y chromosome which exerts a testis-determining action on the indifferent gonad. Hormones secreted by the fetal testes induce male development. In the absence of a Y chromosome, ovaries differentiate and female development occurs. Errors of sex determination result in true hermaphroditism, ax extremely rare condition. Errors in sexual differentiation lead to pseudohermaphroditism. In males, most abnormalities result from inadequate secretion of masculinizing hormones. In females, pseudohermaphroditism almost always results from excessive androgen secretion by the adrenal glands.

    Notes: Explants of 4.5-day-old chick embryonic neuroretinas with mesenchyme were exposed to Methotrexate (MTX) in medium 199 with embryo extract. Proliferative responses of the cultured neuroretinas were followed radioautographically by administration of 3H-thymidine to the cultures. The DNA synthetic, mitotic and pyknotic responses of the ventricular cells of the neuroretina were followed over a 16-hour period. The responses observed suggested that MTX caused a synchronization of the ventricular cells in the pre-mitotic phases with no direct inhibition of mitosis. Furthermore, prolonged exposure to MTX resulted in the accumulation of labeled pyknotic cells, indicating a decline in the regenerative capacity of the proliferative ventricular cells.

    Notes: Nearly 100 years ago, the first formal attempt was made to standardize anatomical nomenclature. As Latin was the only language that many countries had in common, it formed the basis of anatomical terminology. It is common and accepted practice to translate the Latin terms into the language of the country concerned. As anatomical terminology is complex, it becomes very difficult when two or more widely accepted terms are used for the same structure (e.g., epiploic foramen and foramen of Winslow). In 1950, an International Anatomical Nomenclature Committee was formed to standardize anatomical terminology. It produced a book called Nomina Anatomica, which is now in its fifth edition. Many physicians with whom medical and other students are associated are unfamiliar with this new terminology. As a result they use terms, often synonyms, with which they are familiar. Members of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists are urged to use the terminology recommended in the Nomina Anatomica;, fifth edition, and to encourage their clinical colleagues to adopt the new terminology by giving both terms as follows: internal thoracic artery, (formerly called the internal mammary artery). In due course, anatomists and clinicians will be using the same terms and medical and other students will be most grateful.
