    Notes: “Lomo embuchado” is a traditional Spanish dry-cured meat product with two principal stages (salting-seasoning and dry-maturation) in its process. The evolution of chemical (moisture, nitrite, pH and lactic acid) and physical parameters: (CIELAB color space, chroma and hue, a*/b*, ΔE* and reflectance ratios R560/R500, R650/R570 and R630/RS80), during the salting-seasoning stage were measured. Three zones in the salted-seasoned loins were identified, and all parameters in each zone were analyzed. ANOVA and regression analyses were conducted. Moisture, pH and residual nitrite decreased with time (P〈0.01), and lactic acid increased (P〈0.05). Only moisture showed differences between zones (P〈0.05). Color parameters changed during the salting-seasoning stage. Lightness (P〈0.01), redness (only during the first 24 h (P〈0.05)), and a*/b* ratio (P〈0.01) increased. Yellowness (P〈0.01), hue (P〈0.01) and chroma (P〈0.05) decreased during the process. The only parameter that was not affected by time and zone was reflectance ratio R630/R580 (P〉0.05). Moisture and reflectance ratio R560/R500 were affected by zones (PCO.05). An excellent cured color was obtained during salting and seasoning.

    Notes: In the title compound, C23H34O4, the two saturated six-membered rings have slightly flattened chair conformations and the unsaturated ring assumes a 8β,9α-half chair conformation distorted towards a 8β-sofa. The five-membered ring has an unusual conformation close to a 13β-envelope. The acetoxy and methyl ketone substituents are twisted with respect to the average molecular plane of the steroid nucleus. The molecules are hydrogen-bonded head-to-head via the hydroxy and methyl ketone groups forming dimers, which are stacked in planes perpendicular to the b axis.

    Notes: The title compound, C23H32O4, has a 3β configuration, with the epoxy O atom at 16α,17α. Rings A and C have slightly distorted chair conformations. Because of the presence of the C5=C6 double bond, ring B assumes an 8β,9α-half-chair conformation slightly distorted towards an 8β-sofa. Ring D has a conformation close to a 14α-envelope. The acetoxy and acetyl substituents are twisted with respect to the average molecular plane of the steroid. The conformation of the molecule is compared with that given by a quantum chemistry calculation using the RHF–AM1 (RHF = Roothaan Hartree–Fock) Hamiltonian model. Cohesion of the crystal can be attributed to van der Waals interactions and weak intermolecular C—H...O interactions, which link the molecules head-to-tail along [101].

    Notes: Abstract  In vivo intestinal absorption of L-leucine is significantly decreased by the presence of lindane (0.3, 0.2 and 0.1 mM) in perfusion solution (in situ lindane treatment) for 5 min. The inhibitory effect is earlier when lindane concentration is higher, and it is irreversible. There are no changes in D-galactose absorption when lindane (0.3 and 0.2 mM) is perfused for 5 min, but a significant decrease is observed if pesticide is perfused for 10 min at 0.3 mM concentration. Subcutaneous lindane treatment at a dose of 68.76 μmol/kg over 7 days does not alter D-galactose and L-leucine absorption. In situ lindane treatment (0.3, 0.2 and 0.1 mM) induces a significant decrease in basolateral (Na+-K+)-ATPase activity. In contrast, systemic lindane treatment (s.c. injection) at doses of 34.38 and 68.76 μmol/kg over 7 days does not alter this enzyme activity, although a significant decrease is observed in rats injected s.c. with 68.76 μmol/kg lindane over 15 days.

    Notes: Abstract Objective To evaluate the effect of the AT III concentrates upon the clinical evolution and hemostatic parameters. Design Prospective, open, randomized trial. Patients and participants Septic and multiple trauma patients admitted to our Intensive Care Unit. Setting Levels of AT III below 70% were used as criteria to choose 36 patients, 20 of whom received treatment with AT III and 16 did not. Interventions AT III concentrates were administered at an initial dose of 60 U/kg followed by 10 U/kg every six hours. Results The administration of AT III neither contributes to alterations in haemostasis, nor the clinical evolution (evaluated according to Apache II score). Conclusions The results suggest that the administration of AT III concentrates to critical patients with acquired low levels, but without manifest DIC, may not be justified; although further studies on a larger population are required to establish definite conclussions.

    Notes: Abstract The ultrastructure of the papillae and presumed sensory receptors in the tegument of the scolex of Gymnorhynchus gigas plerocercoid were investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Four distinct types of putative sense receptor (including three uniciliated and one nonciliated) are described for the first time in G. gigas, and this investigation is the first detailed ultrastructure study of tegumental receptors carried out in trypanorhynch cestodes. Microtriches arranged in clusters with a dome-shaped pattern seemed to be papillae that contained a ciliated sensory receptor (type I). The density of these papillae was greater in the center of the bothridial adherent surface near the tentacle orifice than in the lateral margins of the bothridia or in the pars post-bothridialis. The type I receptor is characterized by a long cilium anchored in the nerve bulb by a dense basal body but lacks rootlets. The bulb contains one or two electron-dense collars, numerous electron-lucent neurovesicles, and some mitochondria. The type II receptor presents a short cilium retracted into an invagination of the tegument that arises from the basal body. The bulb contains one electron-dense collar and numerous electron-lucent vesicles, but the rootlets are absent. The type III receptor is also a ciliated receptor embedded in a bulb wider than that of types I and II, and it differs from type II in that it possesses two electron-dense collars and small rootlets associated with the basal body. No electron-lucent vesicle was found in the bulb of this type III receptor. The type IV receptor is a nonciliated receptor localized under the surface with no contact to the outside. It consists of a flattened bulb that contains two electron-dense collars and striated rootlets associated with a band of microfilaments. A comparison of the ultrastructural features of receptors in different cestodes is presented.

    Notes: Abstract The efficacy of praziquantel against the metacestode of Echinococcus granulosus was studied by means of in vitro incubations or in vivo experiments. The results of in vitro incubations indicated that the effectiveness of praziquantel was higher when the parasite material comprised cysts from cyst masses than in the case of intact cysts that retained their adventitial layer. Ultrastructural alterations in the germinal layer of collapsed cysts incubated in vitro were detected. The results obtained in mice after 4 months of treatment demonstrated no significant difference between the control and treated groups with regard to the number and wet weight of developed cysts. However, ultrastructural alterations were detected in the cyst tissue that were similar to those described in the in vitro experiment. In contrast, the effect of chemoprophylaxis on the number and the wet weight of developed cysts was extremely significant as compared with the control value, the efficacy being 99.41% and 98.32%, respectively. Moreover, ultrastructural observations of the cyst tissue revealed loss of its integrity, and no intact cyton was observed in the germinal layer of the developed cyst.

    Notes: Abstract The tegumental topography of the plerocercoid of Gymnorhynchus gigas is described for the first time. The surface features were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Eight different types of microthrix pattern were found. Differences in the shape and density of microtriches depend on their location. A unique morphological feature is reported herein, namely, filamentous microtriches that were arranged in clusters with a dome-shaped pattern when the bothridial surface was relaxed but sunk into a crater when the bothridial surface was contracted. In contrast to other trypanorhynchan cestodes, palmate microtriches are not found on the tegument of this plerocercoid. The microtriches on the caudal extension gradually increased in length with growing distance from the blastocyst, which showed short knob-like structures. These structures developed into elongated filiform microtriches on the posterior region of the caudal extension.

    Notes: Abstract Protoscolices of Echinococcus granulosus were incubated in vitro with praziquantel (PZ), albendazole (ABZ), or a combination of both (PZ + ABZ). PZ and ABZ displayed slower protoscolicidal activity when applied separately than when used in combination. Despite the low PZ + ABZ concentrations used, protoscolex viability dropped rapidly (within 15 days). At this time, cysts did not develop following their inoculation into mice. The ultrastructural changes induced in the protoscolices by PZ + ABZ were (a) the loss of sucker concavity, (b) tegumental contraction of the soma region, (c) the formation of digitiform tegumental extensions, (d) destruction of the tegument, and (e) the degeneration of parenchyma cells as reflected by the presence of numerous lamellar bodies. The PZ + ABZ treatment was effective only against small cysts, which had collapsed at 10 days postinoculation (p.i.). This treatment caused the following alterations: (a) loss of cyst turgidity at 6 days p.i.; (b) separation of the laminated and germinal layers; (c) loss of microtriches; (d) the appearance of numerous lipid droplets in the inner region of the germinal layer; (e) vacuolation of the cyton cytoplasm; and (f ) the formation of abundant autophagosomes, which finally led to loss of the integrity of the germinal layer.
