Notes: Resistance sintering characteristics of electrolytic and atomized copper powders mixed with graphite powder in steps of 10vol% up to 50vol% were experimentally investigated. In the experiments electrifying voltage and time, and applied pressure were varied. Post-electrification pressurization and insertion of low thermal conductive austenitic stainless steel discs between the sintering powder cake and electrodes were attempted to promote the sintering. The effects of the operational parameters including the two devices on sintering performance are discussed. Sintering strength of the resistance-sintered composites is also discussed

Notes: Resistance heating performance in some shaped blanks of high-strength steel sheet isexamined by experiment and FE simulation, and the feasibility and effectiveness of the application ofresistance heating to the hot press forming of high-strength steel sheet are discussed. The followingsare made clear through this study. (1) A uniformly distributed current density is essential to uniformblank heating. (2) For a certain shaped blank, no matter how the electrodes are disposed, uniformblank heating is difficult. (3) A blank shape suitable for uniform heating by a single pair of parallelelectrodes is restricted to a rectangle.(4) In case a uniformly heated blank is required, two-piecesimultaneous forming with point-symmetric die layout is recommended from the viewpoint ofmaterial utilization

Notes: The effect of oscillation of internal pressure on the formability and shape accuracy of theproducts in a pulsating hydroforming process of T-shaped parts was examined by finite elementsimulation. The local thinning was prevented by oscillating the internal pressure. The filling ratio ofthe die cavity and the symmetrical degree of the filling was increased by the oscillation of pressure. The calculated deforming shape and the wall thickness are in good agreement with the experimentalones. It was found that pulsating hydroforming is useful in improving the formability and shapeaccuracy in the T-shape hydroforming operation

Notes: A multi-stage stamping process of one-piece automobile steel wheels from tubes wasdeveloped to decrease the loss of material for the blanking. In this process, the tube is nosed into acup with a central hole, and then the taper bottom and side wall of the cup are formed into disk andrim portions of the wheel, respectively. The tube is produced by bending a rectangular sheet into atube and by welding both edges of the bent sheet to prevent the loss of material for the blanking. The stamping sequence of the one-piece wheels was designed by finite element simulation. Thecentral hole of the cup was decreased to a desired diameter of the hub hole without buckling andwrinkling by a 5-stages nosing operation. The taper bottom of the cup was reversely drawn, andthen was flared without folding by 2 stages. The wall thickness of the formed wheel was thick andthin in the disk and rim portions, receptively, and thus the requirement of strength of wheels issatisfied. A one-piece wheel having a hub hole was successfully formed by the designed sequencein a miniature experiment

Notes: The feasibility of hot stamping and press quenching of ultrahigh strength steel sheetusing resistance heating was investigated by demonstrating experiments. In the experiments, arectangular blank of high strength steel sheet, SPFC980Y, 1.2mm thick, 20mm wide and 130mmlong was used and it was resistance-heated with a pair of parallel electrodes placed 120mm awayfrom each other, using an AC power supply with a function of input energy control. The relationshipbetween input energy and heating temperature was examined and then hot stamping and pressquenching performances were examined. The press quenching was also experimented in hothat-shaped bending, and the influences of the heating temperature on spring-back and hardnessproperty were investigated. The results of the experiments revealed that hot stamping and pressquenching using resistance heating are highly feasible

Notes: In this study, deep drawing using plastic die was investigated to prevent seizure during forming. In the deep drawing process of aluminum and titanium sheets, seizure was found to occur during forming due to a high reactivity with other metals. For the prevention of seizure, plastic dies were used in this study. These plastic materials have a good resistant to seizing, since no seizure occurs in the contact surface of the metal and plastic material. Moreover, the effects of seizure andwearing die on the dimensional accuracy of drawn cups were examined using nylon die. The blanks used were pure aluminum, aluminum alloy A5052 and pure titanium. The blanks could be successfully formed with a water lubricant. To increase the dimensional accuracy of the drawn cups, deep drawing using fiber-glass-reinforced nylon and plastic composite steel die was also attempted. It was found that the use of plastic die was very effective in preventing of seizure

Notes: Feasibility of semisolid forging of cast iron using rapid resistance heating wasexperimentally investigated. Gray pig iron FC250 and spheroidal graphite cast iron FCD600, whosecarbon equivalents are both 4.3% in mass, were used for the experiments. Since these cast ironshave a narrow semisolid temperature range, an AC power supply with an input electric energycontrol function was used. In this study, the resistance heating characteristics of the cast irons werefirstly examined, and then their semisolid forging experiments were conducted. In the forgingexperiments, the conditions of the forgings such as microstructures and hardness properties wereexamined, and the feasibility of the semisolid forging of cast iron using resistance heating wasdiscussed. As a result, it was found that the method presented here is highly feasible

Notes: The aluminium alloy and mild steel sheets were joined with mechanical clinching.Deforming behaviour of the two sheets during the clinching was observed from finite elementsimulation and an experiment to avoid defects. The fracture of the upper sheet, necking andseparation are caused by the small upper sheet thickness in the thick total thickness, the small lowersheet thickness in the thick total thickness and the small lower sheet thickness, respectively. Thejoining range for the combination of the upper aluminium alloy sheet of and the lower steel sheet ofis larger than that of the reverse combination. The effect of the difference between the flow stressesof the two sheets on the deformation behaviour was examined

Notes: The 3-D rigid-plastic finite element method using a diagonal matrix was applied toparallel processing using a distributed memory type PC cluster. The cluster composed of cheap PCsbecomes common as a low-cost system in the parallel processing. Since the computers in thedistributed memory type PC cluster have individual memory units, the transfer of date amongcomputers during the computation is required, and thus the time for the data transfer is taken intoconsideration. The renewal of data in each computation is limited because of the time of datatransfer unlike the shared memory type workstation. This brings about the delay of data renewal. Adata transfer scheme was investigated to optimize the total computational time in the parallelprocessing. The effect of the delay of date renewal on the convergence of the solution wasexamined in the simulation of upsetting of rectangular block with an inclined tool by means of acluster composed of 4 PCs and 100MBit/s Ethernet
