    Notes: Amorphous CoFe2O4 with metal ions coordinated in a manner similar to the spinal crystal was prepared by the ion-beam sputter deposition method. The study of magnetic properties was carried out by dc- and ac-susceptibility measurements and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The strong spin-freezing behavior was observed in 80-Hz, 1-Oe ac susceptibility at two spin-freezing temperatures: 284 K (Tf1), which is considered to be caused by a random anisotropy of Co ions coordinated in distorted octahedral sites, and 86 K (Tf2), which might be caused by the frustration of antiferromagnetic interactions due to the amorphous structure. The dc susceptibility showed irreversibility below Tf1 which decreased with increasing applied field. However, a distinct change was not observed at Tf2. The Mössbauer spectrum revealed that some of the paramagnetic Fe ions were frozen below Tf1, with relaxation phenomena, and that the residual paramagnetic ions were frozen at Tf2. The time decay of the thermoremanent magnetization observed below Tf1 showed different behavior compared to that above and below Tf2.

    Notes: The Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) [Fusion Technol. 10, 179 (1986)] is the world's largest stellarator. It was designed and built to demonstrate high beta, steady-state operation in a toroidal confinement system. During its final operating period ATF achieved pulse lengths of over one hour (4667 s). The objectives of these experiments were (1) investigation of plasma performance at times that are long compared to the plasma/wall equilibrium time; (2) determination of plasma control and wall conditioning techniques; and (3) adaptation of plasma diagnostic and data acquisition systems to long-pulse operation. Other experiments have also extended earlier studies of dimensionless-parameter plasma confinement scaling. By employing two discrete electron cyclotron heating (ECH) frequencies (28 and 35 GHz), and by simultaneously modulating the ECH power, magnetic field, and plasma density, it has been possible to maintain fixed plasma beta and collisionality while modulating the normalized gyroradius. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In toroidal plasma confinement devices, the highly energetic fusion products will have trajectories defining drift surfaces that deviate considerably from the magnetic surfaces. An understanding of these drift surfaces is important for efficient operation of a fusion reactor. By appropriate choice of electron energy on the Compact Auburn Torsatron [Fusion Technol. 18, 281 (1990)], normalized drift surface shifts similar to those for fusion products in a reactor can be studied. As a benchmark, a set of experiments have been conducted to study the axis position and central rotational transform associated with varying vertical fields. Corresponding experiments have been conducted which measure the axis position and central transform associated with the drift surfaces of highly energetic electrons. These experiments were compared and a theoretical model incorporating the spatial nonuniformity of the applied vertical magnetic field was developed. The experimental results agreed well with this theory. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Using the combination of a layered perovskite compound (C6H5C2H4NH3)2PbI4 (PAPI), which forms a stable exciton with a large binding energy owing to its low-dimensional semiconductor nature and exhibits sharp and strong photoluminescence from the exciton band, and an electron-transporting oxadiazole derivative, we fabricated an organic–inorganic heterostructure electroluminescent (EL) device. The EL spectrum of the device corresponded well to the photoluminescence spectrum of the PAPI film; the emission was peaking at 520 nm and half-width of the emission was about 10 nm at liquid-nitrogen temperature. Further, highly intense EL of more than 10 000 cd m−2 was performed at 2 A cm−2 at liquid-nitrogen temperature in the device.

The effects of arotinolol on changes in renin release in rat kidney cortical slices in response to isoproterenol (IP) or norepinephrine (NE), were studied in comparison with those of AC-623, a main metabolite of arotinolol, and other typical adrenoceptor antagonists.2. Arotinolol, at concentrations of 10−8 to 10−4 mol/l, inhibited the increasing effect of 10−6 mol/l IP on renin release, in a concentration-dependent manner. Similar results were observed with AC-623, propranolol or labetalol, although the inhibitory potencies of these agents were considerably lower than that of arotinolol.3. The blocking effect of arotinolol on the 10−5 mol/l NE-induced decrease in renin release was much less potent than seen with other α-adrenoceptor blocking agents such as prazosin, phenoxybenzamine and labetalol.4. These data suggest that the potent blocking effects of arotinolol and its metabolite on the increased renin release in response to β-adrenoceptor stimulation may contribute to the antihypertensive effect of this agent.

    Notes: 1. Effects of calcium-interacting agents on the calcium-induced stimulation of renin release from kidney cortical slices pretreated with calcium-free medium were examined.2. The exposure of calcium to the slices pretreated with calcium-free medium enhanced the release of renin, followed by a decreased response in the release. The amount of lactate dehydrogenase released from the slices did not correlate with that of renin.3. High potassium depolarization significantly potentiated the decreased response of renin release, with no influence on the stimulation of the release by exposure to calcium.4. The decrease in renin release was attenuated by calcium-interacting agents, such as nifedipine, TMB-8 and W-7, but these agents were without effect on the stimulation of the release by exposure to calcium.5. Thus, the calcium-calmodulin system apparently is not involved in the increased response of renin release following exposure to calcium.

    Notes: 1. Renal effects of nisoldipine, a potent calcium channel blocker, were examined in anaesthetized dogs.2. Intrarenal arterial infusion of nisoldipine (10, 50 ng/kg per min) did not influence mean systemic blood pressure and renal haemodynamics, but did cause dose-related increases in urine flow and urinary excretion of electrolytes. During nisoldipine infusion at the higher dose, the levels of fractional excretion of sodium, potassium and chloride were significantly elevated.3. In the lithium clearance study, fractional lithium excretion, an index of fractional sodium excretion in the proximal tubules, was unchanged even with the higher dose of nisoldipine, whereas fractional sodium excretion in the distal tubules markedly increased.4. Nisoldipine elicited a significant increment in osmolar clearance without altering the reabsorption of free water.5. Thus, intrarenal administration of nisoldipine at a non-hypotensive dose to anaesthetized dogs produced a significant diuretic effect without alteration in renal haemodynamics. Results in lithium clearance and free water clearance studies suggest that nisoldipine exerts a diuretic action by inhibiting sodium transport at the distal nephron segments beyond the proximal tubules.

Renal handling of electrolytes, including calcium (Ca), in response to physiological saline infusion (20 mL/kg, i.v., for 2 h) as well as basal circulating levels of Ca-regulating hormones were compared in 27 hypertensive elderly females (mean age 80±9 years), in 44 normotensive elderly females (79±9 years) and in 19 young normotensive females (23±4 years).2. The hypertensive elderly females showed excessive increase in urine volume and urinary excretions of sodium (Na), Ca and inorganic phosphate (P) in response to saline infusion, associated with slight but significant decrease in circulating levels of Na and ionized Ca compared with those in the other groups. These hypertensive elderly patients also showed characteristic features both in circulating blood pressure and Ca regulating factors; they showed significantly low levels of plasma renin activity and aldosterone concentration, significantly high plasma levels of atrial natriuretic peptide and noradrenalin, compared with those in young controls and normotensive elderly females.3. Moreover they showed significant increase in basal serum levels of parathyroid hormone and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, and significant decrease in basal serum levels of calcitonin, 25-hydroxy-vitamin D and 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, compared with those in the other groups.4. These results suggest that the exaggerated natriuresis associated with excessive loss of Ca and P in urine may participate in the abnormality of Ca metabolism in low-renin hypertensive elderly patients.
