Notes: Summary A small ColE1 derivative, pAO2, which replicates like the original ColE1 and confers immunity to colicin E1 on its host cell has been constructed from a quarter region of ColE1 DNA (Oka, 1978). The entire nucleotide sequence of pAO2 (1,613 base pairs) was determined based on its fine cleavage map. The sequence of a similar plasmid, pAO3, carrying additional 70 base pairs was also deduced. The sequence in the region covering the replication initiation site on these plasmids was consistent with those reported for ColE1 by Tomizawa et al. (1977) and by Bastia (1977). DNA sequences indispensable for autonomous replication were examined by constructing plasmids from various restriction fragments of pAO2 DNA. As a result, a region of 436 base pairs was found to contain sufficient information to permit replication. The occurrence of initiation and termination codons and of the ribosome-binding sequence on pAO2 DNA suggests that a polypeptide chain consisting of 113 amino acid residues may be encoded by the region in which the colicin E1 immunity gene has been mapped.

Notes: Polymer gel films [poly(1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone-co-N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide) (PVPD)] which contain simple organic electrochromics [p-diacetylbenzene (p-DAB), dimethyl- or diethyl terephthalate (p-DMP or p-DEP)] are prepared and their optical responses to applied voltage are investigated. p-DAP/PVPD film is colored in green by the application of 1.2 V vs. Pt wire (quasireference electrode) across the film, and p-DMP/PVPD and p-DEP/PVPD films are colored in red by the application of -2.5 and -1.5 V vs. Pt, respectively. Their coloring responses are about a few seconds and the bleaching process also occurs rapidly. The films have no optical memory effect. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Two approaches for the preparation of highly ionconductive polymeric solid electrolytes have been followed: one was to add crown ether to cross-linked poly(ethylene oxide) grafted methacrylate polymer swollen by lithium salt/propylene carbonate solution; and the other was to select crosslinked poly(dimethylsiloxane) with a low glass transition temperature for the matrix material. The conductivity of the former electrolyte was 3.2 × 10-3 S/cm even in the absence of crown ether at 20°C and increased to 4.0 × 10-3 S/cm by the addition of 15-Crown-5. The addition of crown ether in the electrolyte also affected the plating and stripping processes of Lion Ni substrate. The latter electrolyte was prepared as a single ion type polymeric solid electrolyte. The conductivity of the electrolyte was ca 10-5 S/cm at room temperature. The polarization curves of Li in the electrolyte were symmetric for O V vs. Li/Li+, therefore the plating and stripping of Li electrode in the electrolyte were reversible. The behavior of the latter electrolyte is preferable for rechargeable lithium battery use.

Notes: Cerium(III) species have been immobilized in Nafion films coated on a glassy carbon electrode by a dipping method. The redox activity was characterized in aqueous acidic solutions by cyclic voltammetry. The redox process was diffusion-limited, suggesting that the cerium(III) species distributed in the multilayer of Nafion and that the diffusion of the charge-compensating anion in the film was rate-controlling. The cerium(III)-immobilized Nafion films showed a mediation activity for the electrochemical oxidation of substituted benzylalcohols to yield corresponding arylaldehydes and carboxylic acids. The activity and the selectivity of the process depended on the oxidation potential of the substrate compound. Macroelectrolysis of p-nitrobenzylalcohol using cerium(III)-immobilized electrodes gave corresponding p-nitrobenzaldehyde with a high rate and selectivity.
