Notes: Summary A high-molecular-weight glycoprotein with a sedimentation coefficient of 22.6 has been isolated and characterized from the accessory cells in the previtellogenic ovary of the echinoid Dendraster excentricus. This glycoprotein is similar to the major yolk glycoprotein of the mature egg in its electrophoretic mobility under non-denaturing conditions, high mannose-type glycan, amino acid composition, constitutive glycopeptides, and immunological determinants. Previous histological and electron microscopical analyses led to the hypothesis that vitellogenesis involves a translocation of material from the accessory cell in the ovary to the oocyte. Because of the close similarities of the accessory cell glycoprotein to the yolk glycoprotein of the mature egg, we conclude that the glycoprotein in the accessory cell is a precursor to the major glycoprotein of the egg yolk. This conclusion is further supported by our additional finding that the accessory cell of another echinoid, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, also contains a high-molecular-weight (24 S) glycoprotein which shows similarities to the yolk glycoprotein of the mature egg in the carbohydrate moiety and the constitutive glycopeptides.

Notes: Abstract  Examination was made of the involvement of macrophage phagocytosis in programmed cell death of tail and body muscle of the frog, Xenopus laevis, during metamorphosis by electron microscopy and immunohistochemical analysis. Electron microscopic observation revealed that macrophages were often found to be present in body and tail muscles at the most active stage of metamorphosis and to actively phagocytose apoptotic muscle fragments. Developmental changes in macrophages were examined using the macrophage-specific antibody, HAM56. Macrophages initially appeared in the early climax stage (stage 59), when the triiodothyronine (T3) level was high, increased rapidly during the process of muscle cell death, and assumed their greatest number at the late climax stage (stage 63/64). They decreased after stage 65/66, with a decrease in T3. Distribution and change in the number of macrophages were the same as those of muscle apoptotic bodies (sarcolytes) during metamorphosis, which suggests an interactive mechanism between macrophages and dying muscle cells. For clarification of this, study was made of the expression of HAM 56 antigens that were X. laevis homologs of mouse attachmin, non-specific adhesion proteins in macrophages. The expression of HAM56 antigens in macrophages was found to increase with macrophage phagocytosis at the late climax stage, thus, macrophage differentiation would appear to take place during metamorphosis and HAM56 antigens may be essential for macrophage–dying muscle cell interactions.

Notes: Abstract Polysiloxane derivative (MPS), obtained from the reaction of polymeric tributylstannyl ester of silicic acid (PTBS) and (3-methacryloyloxypropyl)dimethylchlorosilane (1a), was shown to be a useful inorganic component for the preparation of organic-inorganic hybrid resin as a nanocomposite. Copolymerization of MPS containing methacryloyloxypropyl groups with the common monomer such as styrene, acrylonitrile, or methyl methacrylate proceeded readily at room temperature under UV irradiation to give the corresponding resins (HR). The resins obtained from MPS and methyl methacrylate showed a good transparency and resistance in scratch test, but a poor flexibility. The gels consisted of analogous structure to HR were obtained from PTBS, 1a, and the monomer by one-pot procedure, in which substitution and polymerization proceeded simultaneously.

Notes: Tri-n-butyltin hydride (Bu3SnH) was employed for the synthesis of organotin polymers via radical process. The polymers having both organotin and carbonate groups were obtained by the reaction of Bu3SnH with monomers such as diallylcarbonate and diethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate) via hydrostannation. The copolymerization of diethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate) and the mono-hydrostannated derivative was also conducted to obtain the corresponding polymers.

Notes: Tri-n-butyltin hydride (Bu3SnH) and modified organotin monohydrides which had an allylic ether group were employed for polymerizations of diallylidenpentaerithritol (DAPE) to prepare crosslinked polymers containing both organotin and acetal groups. The use of the latter monohydrides having a terminal unsaturated bond was particularly effective for introduction of various contents of the organotin moieties into the polymers, althought they did not undergo homopolymerizations.

Notes: Tributylstannylated silicic acid (TBSA), which was regarded as a protected polymeric silanol against self-condensation to give silica gel, was newly prepared from the reaction of water glass (WG) and bis(tributyltin) oxide (TBO). The ratios of Si/Sn contained in TBSA were determined by gravimetric analysis to be in the range of 2-3. The gelation of TBSA in usual organic solvents such as hexane, benzene, and dichloromethane was not observed over 3 weeks. In addition, TBSA was shown to be a convenient precursor for the preparations of silica gel modified with organofunctional groups. From the reaction of TBSA with trimethoxysilanes and aromatic alcohols, the silica gels havingorganofunctional groups were obtained with the elimination of a tributyltin group. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Crosslinked polymers containing both ester and organotin moieties were obtained in high yields from diallyl terephthalate (DATP) and tri-n-butyltin hydride via radical processes. The tributyltin ester (1) and the hydrostannated derivatives of DATP (2) were prepared and employed for copolymerizations with DATP. The copolymerizations of 1 and 2 proceeded effectively to afford the corresponding organotin polymers, in which the tributyltin group was incorporated through O-Sn and C-Sn bonds, respectively.
