Notes: The thermal instability effects caused by laser light on the surfaces of several solids have been investigated experimentally. At sufficiently high-radiation intensities, the evaporation front was found to be unstable and different kinds of periodic structures appeared on the laser-damaged surfaces. The features of irradiated surfaces are connected with developing instabilities of melting and evaporation formed from plasma, and with excitation of surface electromagnetic waves.

Notes: Abstract —We present a 2-D image of the upper mantle attenuation using nuclear explosion data from the ultra-long refraction/reflection profile "Quartz." Our analysis is based on a modified common spectrum technique followed by least-squares inversion for Q and iterative ray tracing in the velocity structure obtained earlier. The resulting attenuation structure corroborates the earlier model for northern Eurasia, as well as our recent estimate based on the analysis of the long-range P n phase, and provides significantly more detail than the existing models. The resulting upper mantle attenuation structure is characterised by Q values ranging from 400 to 1800. Down to the depths of 150–190, and probably 400 km, the attenuation increases horizontally in SE direction, away from the Baltic Shield. Our model exhibits strong 2-D, vertical and horizontal attenuation contrasts. A high-attenuation layer in the depth range of 120–150 to 160–180 km can apparently be associated with the presence of a partial melts within the base of the lithosphere.

Notes: Summary 1. Specific sorbents for the affinity chromatography of pepsin on hexamethylenediamine-Sepharose using valine peptides differing by the acyl groups and configurations of the valine residue have been synthesized. 2. The sorbents investigated are effective in the purification of pepsin with a low specific activity when 30–40 mg of protein is deposited on 1 ml of resin, a fourfold purification of the enzyme being achieved.

Notes: Abstract This paper is devoted to certain differential-geometric constructions in classical and noncommutative statistics, invariant with respect to the category of Markov maps, which have recently been developed by Soviet, Japanese, and Danish researchers. Among the topics considered are invariant metrics and invariant characteristics of informational proximity, and lower bounds are found for the uniform topologies that they generate on sets of states. A description is given of all invariant Riemannian metrics on manifolds of sectorial states. The equations of the geodesies for the entire family of invariant linear connections Δ=γΔ, γ∈ IR, are integrated on sets of classical probability distributions. A description is given of the protective structure of all the geodesic curves and totally geodesic submanifolds, which turns out to be a local lattice structure; it is shown to coincide, up to a factor γ(γ−1), with the Riemann-Christoffel curvature tensor.

Notes: Abstract In certain technical applications when a magnetic field with rotational symmetry has to be calculated, it is often a principal requirement that a given line should be a magnetic line of force (or more accurately, that a given surface of rotation should coincide with a surface of magnetic force). An exact particular solution of the problem is found in the case when the given line of force is straight. This solution is subsequently generalized to the case of an arbitrary smooth line, approximating it by a broken line. A method is also proposed for producing and calculating a magnetic field satisfying the above conditions. The solution of this problem may be used in questions of magneto-hydrodynamics and plasmadynamics as the first approximation for the magnetic field in the case of small magnetic Reynolds numbers, when it is required that a certain line of fluid flow should coincide with a magnetic line of force.

Notes: Summary 1. A water-soluble CDI including a chromophoric group has been synthesized. 2. The CDI obtained has been used to modify pepsin and pepsinogen. 3. A hypothesis on the nature of the bond of the CDI with the protein has been formulated. 4. The number of carboxy groups of the proteins investigated that react with CDI at various ratios of the reagents have been determined.

Notes: Conclusions The synthesis of the heptapeptideN ɛ-BOC-N α-pelargonyl-L-lysyl-N ɛ-Z-L-lysyl-D-phenylalanyl-L-leucyl-N ɛ-Z-L-lysyl-N ɛ-Z-L-lysyl-L-threonine, a linear analog of the cyclopeptide part of the antibiotic polymixin B, has been effected (yield 63%). The possibility of using this method for the synthesis of peptides on a polymer support without protecting the hydroxyl group of threonine has been shown.
