    Notes: Synthesis and Polymerization of Unsaturated BenzaldazinesThe preparation of methacrylic and acrylic acid derivatives of isomeric hydroxybenzaldazines and their characterization by u.v.-, i.r.-, 1H and 13C n.m.r. spectroscopy are described. By radical polymerization and copolymerisation with styrene and methyl methacrylate, respectively, crosslinked polymers showing ultraviolet-absorbing properties are obtained.

    Notes: Polymerization of Vinyl Compounds in the Presence of Titanium(III)ChlorideThe polymerization of styrene, acrylonitrile and some methacrylates initiated by a titanium(III) chloride dichloroacetic acid redox system was studied. The monomer selectivity of the polymerization in the presence of titanium(III) chloride was found to be affected by a reductive termination reaction. Titanium(III) chloride acts as a retarder in the polymerization of styrene initiated by azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN). The polymerization of polar monomers like acrylonitrile, methyl, ethyl and propyl methacrylate by AIBN is inhibited by titanium(III) chloride.

    Notes: Vinyl Polymerization Initiated by Reducing Compounds of Transition Metals. VII. Polymerization of Methyl Methacrylate in the Presence of Molybdenum(III) Chloride/Sulfoxide SystemsThe polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by the molybdenum(III) chloride/dimethyl sulfoxide redox system was carried out at 70° in 1, 4-dioxane. The rate of polymerization can be described by the equation Rp = k · [MoCl3]0,5 · [DMSO]0,5 · [MMA]1,0. The overall activation energy was estimated to be 36.0 kJ/mol. It was found that diethyl, dipropyl, dibutyl, diphenyl and dibenzyl sulfoxides could also initiate the polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of molybdenum(III) chloride, whereas vanadium(II) chloride, vanadium(III) chloride, titanium(III) chloride and chromium(II) acetate are inactive in combination with sulfoxides.

    Notes: Synthesis and Polymerization Behaviour of 2-Aryl-5-methylene-1,3-dioxolan-4-ones and Arylbis(5-methylene-1,3-dioxolan-2-yl-4-on)esStarting from 2,6-di(hydroxymethyl)-4-methylphen-ol-Na-salt-1-hydrate (1) a synthesis of 2-alkoxy-5-methyliso-phthaldialdehydes (3a,b) is described via alkylation and oxidation. Condensation of aromatic aldehydes with 3-bromo-2-hydroxypropanoic acid (β-bromolactic acid) affords diastereoisomeric mixtures of new 2-aryl-5-bromomethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-ones (6a-h) as well as the corresponding bisdioxolanones (6i-l). Dehydrobromination of 2-aryl-5-bromomethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-ones (6a-d,i) with DBU leads to 2-aryl-5-methylene-1,3-dioxolan-4-ones (8a-e). Polymerization of compounds 8a,b,d and e proceed via opening of the dioxolanone ring.

    Description / Table of Contents: Grafting of styrene and mixtures of styrene with methyl methacrylate on poly(methacrylic acid-co-trichloroethyl methacrylate) or on poly(methyl methacrylate-co-trichloroethyl methacrylate) is initiated by titanium(III) chloride in dimethylformamide. With styrene crosslinked graft copolymers are formed with high graft efficiency. The grafting of methyl methacrylate on partially oxydized polymeric sulfides initiated by molybdenum(III) chloride in ethylene chloride increases the number-average molecular mass of the starting polymer.
    Notes: Die Pfropfung von Styren und Styren/Methylmethacrylat-Mischungen auf Poly(methacrylsäure-co-trichlorethyl-methacrylat) oder Poly(methylmethacrylat-co-trichlorethylmethacrylat) läßt sich mit Titan(III)-chlorid in Dimethyl-formamid auslösen. Mit Styren entstehen vernetzte Pfropfcopolymere mit hohen Pfropfausbeuten. Die mit Molybdän(III)-chlorid in Dichlorethan initiierte Pfropfung von Methylmethacrylat auf partiell oxidierte polymere Sulfide erhöht das Zahlenmittel der Molmasse des Ausgangspolymers.

    Description / Table of Contents: Grafting of styrene and mixtures of styrene with acrylonitrile or methyl methacrylate on polyvinylchloride is initiated by titanium(III)-chloride in dimethlformamide. The overall activation energy of grafting of styrene on PVC was estimated to be 71.2 kJ·mol-1. Uncrosslinked PVC-g-styrene-co-acrylonitrile is formed with high graft efficiency. The intrinsic viscosity and glass transition of graft copolymers are discussed.
    Notes: Die Pfropfung von Styren sowie Styren/Acrylnitril- und Styren/Methylmethacrylat-Mischungen auf Polyvinylchlorid ist mit Titan(III)-chlorid in Dimethylformamid ausgelöst worden. Die Bruttoaktivierungsenergie der Pfropfung von Styren auf PVC wurde zu 71,2 kJ·mol-1 bestimmt. Unvernetzte PVC-g-Styren-co-Acrylnitril-Polymere entstehen mit hohen Pfropfausbeuten. Es werden das Viskositätsverhalten und der Glasäbergang der Pfropfcopolymere beschrieben.

    Description / Table of Contents: Grafting of styrene or methyl methacrylate on chlorine containing polyesters of 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,1,1-trichloroethane is initiated by titanium(III) chloride and chromium(II) acetate/morpholinocyclohexene or vanadium(III) chloride. Analogous, chlorine containing polcarbonates can be grafted. By using styrene, crosslinked graft copolymers are formed. Their formation is influenced by the gel effect. The influences of structure of the backbone chain and grafting conditions have been investigated.
    Notes: Die Pfropfung von Styren oder Methylmethacrylat auf chlorhaltige Polyester des 2,2-Bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,1,1-trichlorethans läßt sich durch Titanium(III)-chlorid und Chromium(II)-acetat/Morpholinocyclohexen oder durch Vanadium(III)-chlorid initiieren. Analog lassen sich chlorhaltige Polycarbonate pfropfen. Mit Styren entstehen vernetste Pfropfcopolymere, deren Bildung durch den Geleffekt geprägt wird. Der Einfluß der Struktur der Rückgratkette und der Pfropfbedingungen wurde untersucht.
