Notizen: An ion probe investigation of an excimer-laser-ablated plume from a high-Tc superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) target in an oxygen ambient revealed a significant alteration of the propagating plume as the laser spot size on the target was changed. For larger spot sizes, the time-resolved ion signals showed a bifurcation of the laser plume into two distinct components with increasing spot size. The faster component of the plume showed free expansion behavior, while the slow component corresponded to a highly collisional regime that represented the onset of a shock wave. Similar plume characteristics have been seen for laser-generated plumes expanding in high-pressure ambient gases. The YBa2Cu3O7−x films grown under the conditions that produced a high degree of plume bifurcation yielded high-quality superconducting films. Implications of these findings toward superconducting film growth are discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We describe a new method for the simultaneous emission of two CO2 laser pulses from a single transversely excited atmospheric discharge. The transient gains of the pulsed low-pressure sections of two spatially separate hybrid cavities aligned on the discharge were temporally manipulated to allow low-jitter pulse synchronization. Independently frequency tunable dual laser pulses over arbitrarily selected rotational transitions spanning the available P and R branches of the 9 and 10 μm CO2 laser transitions were obtained, overcoming limitations on possible dual frequency combinations that restricted previous techniques. The result of numerical calculations for the hybrid laser, using a four-level rate equation model, supports the observed delay characteristics and provides a physical basis for understanding the dynamics of the synchronization.

Notizen: The presence of a pulsed discharge during the reactive deposition of high Tc thin films allows the lowering of substrate temperatures to ∼475 °C for in situ superconducting film deposition. We present the first ion probe analysis to study the role of this pulsed discharge on the excimer laser ablated YBa2Cu3O7−δ plume. The ionic enhancement in the laser-ablated plume, during reactive deposition in the presence of a positively biased ring electrode, is studied both in terms of its extent and temporal characteristics. A significant increase in the forward-directed incidence of oxygen ions on the depositing substrate, following in the wake of the highly directional plume, is demonstrated. The dependence of this ionic enhancement on ambient oxygen pressure and the bias voltage on the ring electrode is discussed.

Notizen: The question of intensity vs energy fluence dependence in the IR excitation of a polyatomic molecule in the quasicontinuum is addressed. It was found that the energy fluence scaling law breaks down for laser pulses shorter than ∼100 ps for C3F7I. This is consistent with similar results obtained previously for SF6 and C2F5Cl. The reason for the increased intensity dependence is physically due to an increase in the intrinsic small signal absorption cross section of the polyatomic molecules for short interaction times. This increase in the absorption coefficient is not intensity related and is a fundamental property of a dense ensemble of interacting states. The change in the absorption cross section for all molecules studied reveals a nonequilibration of energy relaxation among all the states even for 100 ps pulses. This nonequilibrium situation can be exploited to achieve ps nonstatistical photochemistry.

Notizen: The quasicontinuum of the vibrationally hot (∼10 CO2 laser photons) C2F5Cl molecule was investigated using a two-laser pulse arrangement. The first laser pulse preheated the molecules into the QC (quasicontinuum) while the second picosecond CO2 laser was employed to probe the absorption characteristics of the excited molecules. The second laser could be tuned either in frequency or in pulse duration. Several experiments were performed. In the first experiment, the small signal absorption spectrum of C2F5Cl was measured and compared with the dissociation spectrum obtained by Borsella et al.1 The same ν6+ν10 hot band was observed with a considerably narrower linewidth. In the second experiment, the saturation properties of the hot band were investigated. It was found that the absorption line could be characterized as inhomogeneously broadened with no evidence for any broadening due to intramolecular damping. In a third series of experiments, the absorption of C2F5Cl at low as well as high laser energy fluences was measured as a function of the laser pulse duration between 22 and 120 ps. It was found that (i) the absorption can be characterized as predominantly intensity dependent and (ii) the small signal absorption cross section increased considerably as the pulse duration was decreased. These observations were discussed using the multitier energy level classification scheme in the QC. It was concluded that within the laser pulse duration, individual states within the first tier which interacted with the laser were not coupled to each other. The change in the absorption cross section as a function of the pulse duration is consistent with the picture that under laser irradiation, a rapid equilibrium was achieved with the final state populations remaining relatively constant in time. The final populations were dependent almost entirely on the laser intensity. Increasing the laser pulse duration had little effect on the final state distribution and the total energy absorbed by the molecule.

Notizen: The variation of the collisionless absorption spectral shapes for vibrationally excited SF6 and C2F5Cl molecules as a function of the picosecond probe pulse duration was determined using a two-IR frequency pump–probe scheme. The experiments revealed a spectral narrowing with decreasing pulse duration, similar to a recent observation in C3F7I with a single laser pulse. For C2F5Cl, the vibrational temperature dependence of the spectral narrowing was also studied. The observed experimental results are shown to be consistent with a dynamic multitier classification of energy levels in the QC of polyatomic molecules. An empirical calculation was used to evaluate the relevant parameters associated with the intramolecular coupling. Specifically, the time constants for such a coupling are evaluated to be 〉20 ps for all the molecules studied. The effect of variable density of states on the time constant and spectral width is also discussed on the basis of the C2F5Cl data. It was found that both the redshift and the degree of spectral broadening increased with the internal energy of the molecule. The redshift was also observed to saturate at 〈n〉∼13. This dynamical spectral measurement is distinguished from the usual static spectral measurements in that the laser–molecule interaction time is used as a parameter, thus circumventing the usual pitfalls of inferring dynamical information from spectral measurements.

Notizen: We have analyzed red and blue luminescence from porous silicon as a function of oxidation parameters and feature dimension determined with an atomic force microscope. We have found correlation between blue luminescence intensity and the increase in feature size caused by oxidation. We have further shown that blue luminescence, is identical, with respect to spectrum and fast decay, to that of high microelectronic quality SiO2 grown on crystalline silicon using dry oxygen plus an organic chlorine compound. Thus, we conclude that blue luminescence originates from SiO2 film rather than from the silicon nanocrystals in the porous material. Intensity enhancement, as compared to SiO2 on crystalline wafers, comes from the gigantic surface area of porous silicon.

Notizen: A novel dual laser ablation process that leads to particulate-free film growth is presented. A pulsed CO2 laser and an excimer (KrF) laser have been spatially overlapped on a Y2O3 target with a temporal delay between the pulses. The particulate density of the films grown by this method are at least three orders of magnitude smaller than the particulate density of a single excimer laser ablated film of similar thickness. In addition, a time-of-flight ion probe study indicates a sixfold enhancement of the plume species kinetic energies under dual-laser ablation. The degree of the plume excitation is observed to depend strongly on the delay between the laser pulses. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A new technique for the continuously variable linear attenuation of high-power transversely excited atmospheric (TEA) CO2 laser pulses is reported. The use of a binary gas mixture comprising SF6 as the absorber and helium or argon as the buffer gas causes a significant enhancement in the saturation intensity, thereby allowing saturation-free attenuation of TEA CO2 laser pulses up to 1 MW/cm2. A linearly variable dynamic attenuation range of 0–30 dB, and continuously variable attenuation up to 60 dB in a 10-cm cell length, without spatial or temporal distortion in the attenuated beam is demonstrated.
