    Notes: As dimensions of devices shrink new phenomena are revealed. We present a technique which allows the dimension of a point contact to "shrink'' down to a single atom. Furthermore, this technique enables us to adjust a tunnel barrier between two inherently stable electrodes. Utilizing this technique we show that it is possible to apply a pressure or a tensile force on a single atom contact and study the resulting effects on the transport properties of this microscopic structure. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present a detailed description of the fabrication and operation at room temperature of a novel type of tunnel displacement transducer. Instead of a feedback system it relies on a large reduction factor assuring an inherently stable device. Stability measurements in the tunnel regime infer an electrode stability within 3 pm in a 1 kHz bandwidth. In the contact regime the conductance takes on a discrete number of values when the constriction is reduced atom by atom. This reflects the conduction through discrete channels. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die spektrophotometrische Methämoglobinbestimmung (Messung bei 540 und 525 mµ) wird, durch Gebrauch von 0,1%igem NH3 für die 200fache Verdünnung der Blutproben, bei hohen Methämoglobinkonzentrationen gestört von der Bildung geringer Mengen alkalischen Hämatins. Die Störung läßt sich durch Einführung einer schwächeren NH3-Lösung (0,9 m.aeq/l) beheben. Eine Methämoglobinbestimmung (Messung bei 558 und 523 mµ) mit sehr kleiner Schichtdicke (d=0,013 cm) wurde entwickelt und mit der ersten Methode verglichen.

    Notes: Abstract A clinical, radiological and biochemical study of 300 Cape coloured out-patients in order to clarify the diagnosis of rickets and to establish its incidence in the specific ethnic group selected, is presented. 95 Cases (31.6%) were diagnosed as suffering from rickets. Analysis of the results indicates that radiological examination is necessary to confirm or exclude the clinical diagnosis. The most useful biochemical parameter is the serum level of alkaline phosphatase.
