Notes: Background. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is designated by the Japanese government as one of the intractable diseases and all patients, who suffer from these diseases, are registered to get financial aid for treatment. Using newly registered SLE patients, a case-control study was conducted to evaluate potential risk factors. Methods. Two-hundred and eighty-two women SLE patients, newly registered to receive financial aid for treatment, and 292 randomly selected health examination participants at public health centers (controls) were surveyed from April 1988 through March 1990. By means of a self-administered questionnaire, data concerning demographic variables, smoking and drinking habits, past medical and reproductive history, and family history were collected. Results. Based on unconditional logistic regression analysis, the risk of SLE was significantly increased for current smokers (age-adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 2.31, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.34–3.97). Alcohol and milk intake were inversely associated with risk. Family histories of asthma and collagen diseases, including SLE, were associated with significantly elevated risk of SLE (OR = 2.07, 95% ci 1.14–3.77; OR = 5.20, 95% CI 1.08–24.95, respectively). Regarding reproductive function, women with menarche at age 15 or later had significantly higher risk than those, who started menstruating before age 12 (OR = 3.82, 95% CI 1.66–8.81 for menarche at 〉 15 years and OR = 2.90, 95% a 1.14–7.39 for menarche at 〈inlineGraphic alt="geqslant R: gt-or-equal, slanted" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:00119059:IJD333:ges" location="ges.gif"/〉 16y). Conclusions. Our study suggests several risk factors, including smoking, family history, and reproductive history that may increase the risk of SLE.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine incidence and regional distribution of hip fracture throughout Japan. The incidence rate of hip fracture in Japan was estimated by a nationwide survey for departments of orthopedics of all hospitals with 200 beds or more and supplementary survey for all medical institutions in three prefectures. The mail survey was used in main and supplementary survey. The mail questionnaire included items such as the number of new patients seen during 1 January through 31 December 1987 regardeless of cause of fracture, and also sex, age and address of each patients. According to these two surveys, the incidence of hip fracture in Japan was estimated to be approximately 41,000–48,000 (males 10,400–12,000, females 30,600–36,000) in 1987. Incidence rate of hip fracture increased approximately exponential throughout life. The incidence rate was 22–26 per 10,000 persons in females aged 70–74 and 118–139 in those aged 85–89. As regards regional differences, incidence for females showed to be higher in the western region than in the eastern, while such tendency was not observed in males. A further epidemiological survey will be necessary to elucidate regional differences of hip fracture.

Notes: Abstract We review the results of our investigation of the incidence of fractures of the proximal femur, distal radius, and proximal humerus, in Tottori Prefecture, Japan, and compared our results with those found previously in other countries. During the period from 1986 to 1988, 918 proximal femoral, 1103 distal radial, and 260 proximal humeral fractures in patients over 35 years of age were recorded in Tottori Prefecture. In all fracture types, age-and sex-specific incidence was lower among Japanese than among European or North American whites.

Notes: Abstract To investigate recent trends in the incidence of fractures in children and adolescents, we conducted a survey of distal radius fractures in 1992 and 1995 in Tottori Prefecture, Japan. Seven-hundred and forty-five patients under age 20 years were registered (562 males and 183 females). The age and sex-specific incidences of fractures in patients under 20 years of age were higher in males than in females, showing peaks at age 12–13 years for males and at age 10–11 years for females. The incidences had an obvious monthly variation, with peaks in spring and autumn. The age and sex-specific incidences were compared with those in the period 1986–1988, which we reported previously. The incidence in each year showed a significant increase with time for males but not for females. We conclude that the incidence of distal radius fractures in children and adolescents has a prominent peak matched by the age of the growth spurt, and the incidence of the fracture has increased in males during the past decade in Tottori Prefecture.
